King's Business - 1920-07

Can’t Stop ’Em Pooling their life savings, 634 Jews from Southern Russia recently chartered a boat at Odessa, broke through govern mental and Zionist restrictions ■ to hold them back from Palestine until the land is opened to immigration, and landed in Jaffa. This is said to have been the first group of considerable size that has reached Palestine since the mass-desire of Jews to emigrate became a striking characteristic of Jewish life all over the world. Any Way to Get There The American Zionist organization has received word that many Jews have been drowned in the Black Sea, trying to reach Palestine in fishing smacks. Hundreds have succeeded in reaching the land in unseaworthy craft and landed more dead than alive. Many more have trekked across Russia, suffer ing terrible hardships. Getting to be a Panic Recent pograms in South Russia have thrown the Jews into a panic, it is re ported in the papers. Thousands are winding up their business so as to be ready at any moment to leave the coun try. The more impetuous are selling everything they possess and are mak ing toward seaports. If the persecution continues, it is certain that the masses will begin a large emigration on their own account, which would create serious complications in the constructive work in Palestine. Anti-Zionist Demonstration The Arab population of Jerusalem re cently tried to put on a great anti- Zionist demonstration but it turned out to be a complete fiasco. The large crowds that lined'the streets of the Holy City on that day were composed princi pally of Jewish spectators. They watched the 700 demonstrators wend their way to the various consulates to present their protests against Palestine being given back to the Jews. The Zionist Machinery In an article in “ The New Palestine,” Lewis Lipsky tells something about the machinery that is at work to build the new homeland. There is a Zionist Ad

ministrative Commission, the agency of the whole Jewish people, the executive arm, with its industrial, financial, agri cultural and educational branches. There is an American Zionist Medical Unit, sanitizing the land and eradicat ing disease. There is the Zionist Bank, about to blossom into various branches that are1 to provide the credit for all sorts of enterprises. There is the Jew ish national fund, purchasing and devel oping land for settlement. There are the Hebrew schools, the creators and circulators of the Jewish spirit, soon to he capped by the Hebrew university. There is Patrick Geddes planning the re construction of the city of Jerusalem. There is the Palestine Restoration Fund, which feeds the various enterprises for the purchase of land, the extension of credits, the investigation of prospective enterprises and all the work of prepa ration, and reconstruction. Polishing up on Hebrew The Zionist department of education has on the press a new book for which there has been considerable demand. It is a Hebrew phrase book with Yiddish and English translations. It contains words, phrases and expressions most necessary for every-day conversation. Ministers and others intending to visit Palestine should find this work useful in giving them a quick working knowl edge of the language. Miscellaneous Notes The Zionist organization in America is said to have about 172,000 members. Three thousand Jerusalem •school children celebrated Jewish Arbor Day by planting 500 trees in the suburbs of the Holy City. Jerusalem now has a “ technical of fice,” comprising leading engineers in Palestine, whose work it will be to train Jewish workmen in the use of modern machinery. Christian missionaries in Palestine will not have an easy time. It is said that the City Council of Jerusalem has formed a committee to oppose all ef forts of the various missionaries in Palestine.
