would run away, some looked very angrily at us, others cursed us bitterly and still others closed their doors firm ly that we might not enter their homes. Some of those who had shown an inter est in the Gospel and had accepted books from us burned them. The report was circulated that we had put poison in the wells, and they went to work and drew dll of the water out of some of the wells to get rid of the poison. Their fear was very pitiable, surely Satan was doing his utmost to prevent these people from be ing saved. In spite of all the persecu tion and sorrow there were several things that made us very happy and called forth our praise to God. 1, Al though the epidemic was so severe every member of our Band kept well. 2, The house in which we were living while in that section was well situated and had a large courtyard which separated it from other houses and gave us a supply of good fresh air, thus shielding us from infection. 3, In several homes where the people had believed in Jesus Christ and were praying to God to protect them from the epidemic, either the disease was light and they were soon well, or the disease did not visit their homes at all, these people gave testimony to the power of God to protect them,, and this testimony was the means of leading others to believe in Christ. 4, On ac count of the severity of the epidemic two members of our Band with five of the local inquirers spent two days in prayer and fasting, asking God to for give the sins of the people and to stay the plague. Please join us in earnest prayer that we may be kept in safety and in peace in this place and that we may be used to help many turn to the Lord, for His own glory.” Encouraging Reports In a previous letter we wrote of the blessing God gave in this place before our brethren left. Last evening a let ter came from Mr. Ou-Yang telling of their joyous experience in another field where they had just finished work. He wrote: “ God has greatly blessed the work at Dasheng-Chiao, over thirty have put their faith in Christ, seven entire families having turned to the Lord.” Mr. Tien of Band No. 2 writes an in teresting account of a Mr. Wu Chang- ming who came to their headquarters for further instruction in the truths of the Gospel. Mr. Wu is seventy-six years of age, he had been at their preaching services and had been con-

Biola Evangelists Visiting a Home supporting one of our workers for years, friends whom “ God has raised up as in tercessors” in a most literal sense, friends who so fully realize that God has given them a share in this work that though we have not been able to write to them personally in over two years, they still remember us daily and meet regularly to unitedly lay this work and the workers before God. We .want your prayers, we must have your prayers, we need you more and more as the work grows. But we want your thoughtful, intelligent, effectual prayers, and to pray intelligently and with real power you must know the whole truth. We have written of “ Open' Doors,” of “ Glorioud Harvests,” and all that we have written about these things has been true, and has led you to join with us in praise to God Who alone has done it. But, “ There are many adver saries.” They are here in just as much force as in Paul’s day, and possibly even more, and we want to tell you about them that you may join with us in the battle for their defeat. The Chinese Superstition About two months ago, Mr. Ou-Yang, leader of our Band No. 4, wrote us as follows: “ At first the work at Wuliba was very encouraging, but suddenly evil reports were circulated on all sides, the epidemic was very severe ( “ the flu” ), in some homes two out of three died, and they said that our books had poison in them, and that in any family where our books were there would be sickness and death. The result was that when we went out many who saw us coming
