677 Saul’s sword brought his own death (1 Sam. 31:4). David’s weapons were not those of Saul (2 Cor. 10:4): “ For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” David’s dependence was not upon stone or sling, but upon God. (Eph. 6:11-17.) (4) DAVID DEFEATS THE GIANT, vs. 48-51. The giant moves leisurely toward David (1 Thess. 5:3) but David moved quickly to the fray (2 Cor. 2:11). The giant, perhaps, lifts his helmet. Then David sends the stone, and God gave it power supernatural. It pene trates the forehead. (Psa. 18:34.) “ He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” He completed the conquest with Goliath’s own sword. David was a type of Christ. Goliath, a type of Satan. Christ was anointed, tested, had conflict and victory. He took one stone out of the five (Deuter onomy) and with that slew the enemy. With Satan’s own weapon— death—- Christ destroyed him. (Heb. 2:14.) “ That through death he might de stroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.” David declares his trust in Jehovah, and prophesies (v. 46). His victory was due solely to the stone (v. 50; Dan. 2:34, 35), Let us measure difficulties with God’s promises, and measure trials by God’s grace. How weak and helpless the lad looks! (1 Cor. 10:13; 2 Cor. 12:9). “ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (Eph. 3: 20 .) David’s weapon consisted of five smooth stones and a sling. Four (the world number) plus one (the number of God) equals five, corresponding to the five books of the Pentateuch.

THE K I N G ’S BUS I NE S S — but when you measure him with God, you are filled with courage. (2) THE PHILISTINE DISDAINS DAVID, vs. 41-44. David looks very weak and helpless to Goliath. He disdains him, “ Am I a dog?” (Matt. 5:11.) “ Blessed are ye when men shall re vile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you false ly, for My sake.” Goliath is a type of Satan. Three things characterize him: (1) Bold strutting with brazen face. (2) Boast ful prophesying, “ I will give thee.” (3) Blasphemous defying of God and His people. For forty days he has stood thus,-—- forty, the number of probation. Man’s abilities were fully tested for 4000 years. Satan was victorious over man until our David came upon the scene. (3) DAVID DEFIES THE PHILIS TINE, vs. 45-47. David pours contempt upon the op posing army. (Matt. 26:53-55.) “ Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and He shall present ly give me more than twelve legions of angels.” Notice the ignorance of unbelief. Saul sought to clothe David with his armor. David donned it, but he doffed it. (Gal. 3:3.) “ Are ye so foolish, having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect through the flesh?” (Gal. 5:7.) He had not proved Saul’s armor. (Eph. 4:22, 24.) The world seeks to clothe the church with its worldly methods, worldly wis dom, worldly ways, worldly schemes, all fail when used by God’s people. (1 Cor. 1:17.) Faith must be unhampered, free. Saul’s armor failed Saul himself (1 Sam. 31:3). And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.”
