bow, quiver and arrows. This is prob ably the only place in our language in which the word “ artillery” is not applied to cannon or ordnance, but simply to weapons of war.— Treas. Scr. A token of homage to the prince’s rank, but on a close approach every other consider ation was sunk in the full flow of the purest brotherly affection.— Jamieson. Wept one with another. Perhaps it was with some view to the friendship of Jon athan and David that Solomon wrote, “ There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Jonathan was such a friend to David, but the words suggest a higher friendship. The glory of Jon athan’s love for David fades before our Lord’s love for His brethren. For us He laid down His life and none who receive His friendship can ever be sep arated from His love.— Bible Exp. v. 42. Go in peace. It seems as if Jonathan would have reaped a greater blessing if he had left his father alto gether and gone over to the side of the man whom God had chosen. How many men today believe in Christ but do not follow Him to the limit. Poor Jonathan falls with his wretched father on the fatal field of Gilboa, (1 Sam. 31:2) when he might have been David’s prime minister.'r-Hllott. One consolation alone remained— “ The Lord be between me and thee” . Even in that darkest hour Jonathan could say, “ Go in peace”— what peace? “ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.”— Blaikie. We have sworn both of us. Though the believer be despised of many, compelled to leave all comforts and part with best friends for Christ’s sake, be this his comfort, that he has made an everlasting covenant with Je hovah who will exalt him in due time.— Sum. Bible. The Lord be between me and thee. A true friend is worth all hazards we can run.— Young. The ideal of friendship is to feel as one while re maining two.— Swetchine. The firmest friendships have been formed in mutual diversity as iron is more strongly united by the fiercest flame.— Colton. all times. Prov. 17:17. Approach: I have here in my hand a smooth stone; what does it make you think of? Of David and the giant. Kenneth, will you tell us that wonderful story for I know we BEGINNERS all want to hear it AND PRIMARY again, and this Mabel L. Merrill morning we have a visitor and he will enjoy hearing it. (Review last week’s story.) Prayer. Lesson Story: Of course the people loved David after his bravery in killing the wicked giant, and then David was kind and loving and a beautiful charac ter, for he loved God and tried to please Him in everything he did. Today we are to hear some more about another man who was very brave also, and he was King Saul’s son, whose name was Jona than. Some of us remember how Jona than and his armor bearer were very brave one day when they went all alone up a mountainside against an army of wicked people who were fighting against God’s people, and the reason Jonathan was so brave was because he was trust ing in God to help him just like David. (Make clear to the children what David and Jonathan had each done for Israel, emphasizing their courage and their de votion to God.) These two fine young men, David who had been anointed to be king, and Jonathan who was the son of a king, met each other after David’s great victory over the wicked giant Go liath, and when Jonathan saw David and heard him speaking to his father, King Saul, he loved him; the Bible says he loved him as his own soul, that is, as much as he loved himself. It was the Lord who caused Jonathan to love David, so that David might have Jona than for his friend in all the troubles that were coming upon David later on. Jonathan loved David so much that he took off his beautiful robe and put it on David, and gave him his sword, and bow and his girdle. This is such a beau-
