several years David had to move from place to place to keep away from King Saul, who wanted to kill David. This of course made it very hard and sad for David. Now David we remember had been anointed to be king, and would be the next king after Saul. Several times David could have taken the life of Saul, but he would not harm him. Now would you like to hear about one of the times when David could have taken Saul’s life from him. This is the way it happened. King Saul and his army were sound asleep for it was night, and his big spear was sticking in the ground right close to his head, so he could grab it quickly if he needed it; there was also a cruse of water near him. Poor Saul kept on trying to find David and kill him, but of course David was safe for God was watching over him. Now David knew Saul and his army were near by and he asked for some man to go with him over to where Saul was sleeping, and a young man who was David’s nephew said he would go. Now children this is just so interesting and really and truly exciting, for you know Saul’s best and trusted soldiers were near him to protect him from any harm. Now if they should awaken and see David, there would be no chance for David to escape from all those soldiers. Very quietly David and his nephew slip in among the sleeping soldiers, and at last they are standing right beside Saul as he sleeps. David’s nephew begs David to let him kill Saul now that there is such a good chance, for Saul is an enemy to David, but David said no, it would be a great sin to kill Saul, even thought he was a bitter enemy. David told his nephew the Lord would remove Saul at the right time. Then David took Saul’s spear and the cruse of water, and they slipped away without any one awaking, and the Bible tells us that God caused them to sleep so soundly they did not hear David and his nephew. The next day David stood on the moun-

The Man who was kind to his Enemy. 1 Samuel 26. Memory Verse: “ Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you.” Luke 6:27. Approach: This morning we will draw on the board a jug which is some thing like the cruse mentioned in our story in which King Saul carried water for drinking as he BEGINNERS traveled about with AND PRIMARY his army of soldiers. Mabel L. Merrill Then over on this side of the board we will draw a spear, which you see is a long stick with a sharp metal point on the end like a sharp knife. This weapon King Saul carried in his hand as he traveled, or stuck in the ground right close by his head when he was asleep. Now you will know just what is meant when we speak of the cruse of water or spear. Let us bow our heads and ask Jesus to help our ears to listen and our minds to remember this beautiful story we are to hear today. Lesson Story: Can you boys and girls tell me about two young men who lived a long time ago who were very close friends and who loved each other very much? Every hand is up, so you all had two ears that were god listeners last Sunday, and now Clara, you may tell us about those two friends, and if you forget some of the others will help us. Now you see David had proven him self a noble, brave young man and had even risked his life for God’s people Israel in going out alone against Goliath (but David knew he was not alone for God was with him) and King Saul had no reason for hating David, but King Saul let evil feelings of jealousy and hatred live in his heart, and those kind of feelings shut God out, and of course if God was shut out He could not help King Saul, and that was why we saw David telling his dear friend Jonathan goodbye in our story last week, and hurrying away from King Saul.
