Davis Welcome Packet_2024-25_v2

Welcome Packet 2024–2025

Dear New and Returning Students,

Welcome to Davis College!

Davis College has been training men and women for gospel ministry for more than 120 years. Hundreds of Davis College alumni serve in dozens of countries around the world and countless towns and cities right here in the USA. Davis College alumni are youth leaders, missionaries, evangelists, educators, pastors, worship leaders, and biblical counselors. We are honored that you have chosen Davis College to be your partner in ministry preparation. As you walk around this beautiful campus, begin to pray and to dream about what God has in store for you in ministry. As you take classes, interact with your professors, build relationships with staff and other students, God will expand your vision for ministry. As you serve Him on campus, and as you seek Him during chapel time, God will begin to pour His plan into your heart. This next year Davis will challenge you for a lifetime of service. It will not only grow your relationship with God but deepen your understanding of who He is though His Word. The place is the same. The experience is the same. But the preparation will challenge you in different ways. Two schools with the same mission and the same goal are partnering to prepare you for a lifetime of service. Let me encourage you. Do not be intimidated by the challenges before you. Rather, be ignited by the fire that God has placed within you. Build your faith. Banish doubts and fears. Keep your focus on Jesus, the living Jesus, who walks beside you and talks to you each day. Don’t compare yourself to someone else. God has a special plan for you! Invest your life selflessly in the lives of others. Be a friendly person. Smile until your face hurts! Be a blessing all over campus.

You are welcome to come to the Davis Administration Center. Just ask for “Doug,” and some kind person will point the way. I’m here to serve you. I’m here to listen. I’m here to help.

Finally, put Jesus first and live for Him each day. In practical terms, this means lining up your life with His life every day. One day and then the next day. Don’t get ahead of Jesus. Remember, you’re a follower. Your thoughts, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your plans, your every need... lay them at His feet. When you live this way each day, day after day, two years will pass, and you will find yourself older, wiser, stronger, more mature, better prepared, and in the center of God’s will.

Blessings,

D. Alan Blanc President, Davis College

What To Bring

Dorms: Each dorm room is furnished with wall-to-wall carpeting and drapes. Each student will need to bring their own pillow, blankets, towels and bed sheets (twin size). Each student should bring two warm blankets. Each student has a desk, dresser, and limited closet space. A desk lamp is necessary for studying. You may bring a small wastebasket for your own use. Books & Bookstore: Any required textbook not included in the LOGOS software will be available in the Bookstore and can be purchased at 25% off for all students. Students are required to have personal laptops and will be equipped with the LOGOS software (included in the fees for a year). LOGOS contains many of the textbooks in an e-book format along with their course syllabi. For more information on laptop specifications for LOGOS, check out wordoflife.edu/ logos . Information on how to download the LOGOS software system will be sent to you in the mail prior to Registration. The Campus Bookstore will be open Registration Weekend and daily through the school year. Personal and gift items, textbooks, and paper supplies are available. Personal checks, Visa, MasterCard or Discover may be used at the Bookstore.

A good Study Bible is helpful. King James Version, New King James Version, English Standard Version, New American Standard Version, or Holman Christian Standard Version are recommended.

Music: Bring your musical instrument with you, if possible. These can be kept in the Music Building, and you can practice there. There will be ample opportunity throughout the year to use these, both in formal and informal settings. All students will attend sessions on building their life around biblical principles. It is recommended that students build such principles for entertainment. Transportation: Cars and bikes are encouraged. Bikes should be equipped with a lock and chain. If you are bringing a car, your car must be registered when you arrive. There is a one-time $50 registration fee for vehicles that can be paid at Opening Weekend Registration. Miscellaneous Items: A small suitcase or travel bag is useful as students go out on weekend ministries. A laundry bag is helpful for making those necessary trips to the laundromat, which is located on the Bible Institute campus. Bows and arrows, hunting knives, and guns should be left at home. If it is necessary to bring any such item for a specific reason, they must be checked in and left at the Bible Institute Office.

Phones: Students will need to provide their own phone. If you plan on bringing a cell phone, please note that Verizon has the best coverage, and AT&T comes in second.

Finances Large amounts of money should not be left in the dorms. There are no banking facilities on campus. However, there is an ATM located in the Café and the lobby of the Bollback Student Life Center. Glens Falls National Bank & Trust has offices in the Village of Schroon Lake (9 miles north) and Chestertown (6 miles south) where students may open a checking account. This will facilitate check cashing and money handling. School Breaks Vacation breaks are in December, March, and June. Students will be notified when they can head home for break, but generally it will be after the morning exam. Flights should not be scheduled before 2:00 PM on the first day of break. The campus is closed during vacation breaks. Students are not fed or housed on campus during this time, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Student Life staff. Travel arrangements should be made in accordance with the academic calendar. Students are expected to return on time after vacations and are not permitted to leave early. Throughout the year, students may obtain special permission to stay off campus overnight through the Student Life staff (students must file appropriate paperwork on time and take care of missed service assignments or ministry ahead of time).

8

School Calendar A tentative school calendar can be viewed on the next page. Students may generally leave campus by 11:00 AM on the day classes end. Please do not make any flight arrangements before 2:00 PM on the last day of class. You are expected back on campus by 7:00 PM the day vacation ends. The Albany Airport is 1.5 hours from campus, so plan your flight departures and arrivals carefully.

Job Opportunities Davis students will have the opportunity to find a job off campus or explore some part-time opportunities on campus. Word of Life will have a Job board that will have on-campus, part-time opportunities for Davis Students.

Ministry Information Davis students have an assigned Word of Life ministry, but we prioritize their preferences to try to accommodate If someone wants to do a local church ministry, etc.

Camp Requirements The goal is to give our upper classmen more leadership opportunities during camp if they are qualified to fill such roles. These positions are not required, and students would be compensated for the work they do in the summer, but not for Snowcamp. Snowcamp will count towards their ministry requirement.
