Breakthroughs That Preserve Cognitive Power Mind Matters

Philip Crowley’s debut book, “ AVOID STARTUP FAILURE!: Learn the Top Ten Causes of Failure for Technology Startups and How to Turn Them to Your Advantage ,” reveals the insider secrets and strategic tools that

The mind is our true home, and everything we are depends on how well that home is maintained. The more human beings learn about brain function, the longer we can function productively. Naturally, I also have a personal and professional interest in maintaining my mental sharpness and functionality for as long as possible. The longer I can maintain my focus and analyze legal issues effectively, the longer I will be able to help people as a lawyer. The better I can maintain my brain health, the more I can pursue my interests and enjoy my time with dear loved ones and friends. I’m sure everyone reading this message aspires to achieve the same goals. With this sentiment in mind, I’d like to share a few recent and deeply fascinating developments I’ve seen in the world of brain health research and treatment. And that journey begins at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Comprehensive Center for Brain Health in Boca Raton, Florida. A tour of the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health’s website ( UMiamiBrainHealth. org/research ) reveals the facility is taking a proactive and inspiring approach to advancing brain health through extensive research and community education initiatives.

The university’s work hits home for me, as a friend of mine, Wendy Stahl, has participated in brain studies there for at least the past three years. Conducted under the direction of Dr. James E. Galvin, M.D., M.P.H., these

comprehensive annual studies aim to identify premarkers for various brain health issues. Wendy tells me that she has undergone “every possible test you could imagine,” including blood, eye, smell and memory examinations, as well as brain scans and tests that involve walking on sensor pads to measure her gait. She also says that the results she receives following these studies comprise “literally six pages of data.” With no known brain issues when she began the studies, Wendy was an ideal candidate when she first walked into the center in her late 60s. Now, at 72, her cognitive health remains strong and is a precious asset to Dr. Galvin and his team in their ongoing research. “The researchers are looking for long-term trends,” she explains. “Currently, since I have no significant disease of any kind, I’m in a

neutral group that’s valuable to them. They’re not trying to diagnose me; they’re looking for a sufficient sample group over time to identify changing trends and patterns. That’s the value of this kind of research.” Not surprisingly, Wendy hopes her time with Dr. Galvin’s team will help lead to breakthroughs in brain health treatment. “Understanding brain health and brain illness are vital research areas for all of us. I’m happy to be able to give a little time to these research teams with the hope that their work will lead to understanding and treatments,” she says. In New York, meanwhile, significant new progress in preventing falls related to cognitive decline is revolutionizing the field Continued on Page 3 ...

Positive Thinking for Mind and Body Fuel for Flourishing

“The potential for life-draining negativity lies within you, just as does the potential for life- giving positivity. You have more say than you think about which you feel, and when.” The above quote, by esteemed author and educator Barbara Fredrickson, Ph.D., is as much a formula for ongoing mental and physical health as it is an inspiring message of self-affirmation. As the scientific community continues to deepen its understanding of the synergistic relationship between our minds and bodies, evidence suggests that our mindset has a greater influence on our physical longevity and well-being than many people realize. A SPRINGBOARD FOR A SOUNDER SELF According to the Mayo Clinic, research suggests that positive thinking plays a crucial role in maintaining bodily soundness. The potential benefits of regular optimism include a strengthened immune system, increased life expectancy, improved cardiovascular

health, decreased levels of physical pain and a reduced risk of death from infections, respiratory conditions and cancer. Studies have shown that a positive outlook can be better maintained through regular exercise throughout the week (with 30 minutes most days being the optimum goal) and by following healthy dieting habits. Additionally, regulating our thoughts rationally, such as refraining from saying anything negative to ourselves that we wouldn’t say to someone else, is an invaluable way to increase internal positivity. A FRAMEWORK FOR POSITIVE FOCUS In her book “Positivity: Top-Notch Research Reveals the 3-to-1 Ratio That Will Change Your Life,” Dr. Fredrickson outlines the direct correlation between positive thinking and sustained health. Through extensive research, she developed a “3-to-1” ratio that is as effective as it is simple: An individual needs to enjoy three positive emotional

experiences for every negative one he or she endures to ensure ongoing mental and physical resilience. “Positivity doesn’t mean we should follow the axioms ‘Grin and bear it’ or ‘Don’t worry, be happy,’” she explains. “Those are simply superficial wishes. Positivity runs deeper. It consists of the whole range of positive emotions — from appreciation to love, from amusement to joy, from hope to gratitude and then some.” Crowley Law LLC highly recommends “Positivity” as an intriguing view of how our thoughts can strengthen or weaken our health. Vedo Systems Counsel Cleared for Launch

“At Vedo Systems, we develop software for NASA and other commercial aerospace companies, encompassing a range of applications from vehicle flight systems to ground simulators used for testing onboard software. After working at NASA for several years, I decided to transition to starting my own company, launching Vedo Systems 10 years ago this fall. “When I started Vedo Systems, it was just me; now our team and business have grown and are thriving. Early in the process, I used LegalZoom to help me get up and running before hiring John Walker of Walker Law to formalize the company’s fundamental legal documentation. After

being awarded a substantial contract last year, the company faced a higher burden to ensure that its business structure and documents, particularly those related to licensing agreements, were rigorous and properly aligned. It was at this point that John referred us to Phil Crowley. “Working with Phil broadened our perspective beyond licensing agreements, enabling us to develop a greater emphasis on protecting our intellectual property, our overall structure, and our existing successful engineering services business. Instead of doing exactly what we had asked of him, which was to write a software licensing agreement

for us, he went above and beyond by helping us strengthen various aspects of our business and introducing us to considerations we hadn’t thought of previously. Phil’s willingness to walk us through real-life examples of businesses he’s helped has helped us make better decisions. “Thanks to Phil’s help, I’m excited to move forward with an expanded corporate structure, licensing agreement and being ready for growth in product development in the future. I recommend Crowley Law 100%.” –Amanda Acevedo

of neurology. Jeannette R. Mahoney, Ph.D., professor of neurology at the Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University and president/founder of JET Worldwide Enterprises Inc., is the force behind CatchU ® , an app created to provide greater insight into the intersection of sensory, cognitive and motor function in aging. Currently available on Apple iOS, with an Android version forthcoming, CatchU is a first-of-its-kind quantitative app that assesses fall risk in older adults through a simple reaction-time test. During the test, users are presented with various sensory stimuli, and their response times to each target are tracked. These reaction times are measured to detect both potential fall risks and early signs of Alzheimer’s. The app is made available to patients through physician recommendations. “Once the patient has completed the 10-minute CatchU test, the results are sent directly through our proprietary algorithms, and a PDF report detailing the patient’s reaction time, multisensory results and recommendations is emailed directly to the ordering physician,” Dr. Mahoney shared with me in a recent conversation. “If the patient exhibits a positive peak of multisensory integration, they’re doing well and may not require follow-up for another year. However, if the multisensory integration waveform is in the negative, we know there’s a problem, and the patient should start following their physicians’ recommendations to be proactive instead of reactive in an effort to avoid potential falls.” CatchU is reimbursable through existing Medicare telemedicine codes, and Dr. Mahoney is working to eventually make this wellness device available directly for consumers who’d like to purchase it for their parents and others who would benefit from the results. On a personal note, I was delighted to help Dr. Mahoney secure an exclusive license with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and she also now has an official patent. Just as this edition of the newsletter went to press, I was delighted to learn that CatchU was selected as a winner of the National Institute on Aging’s 2025 Start-Up Challenge, an honor that includes a $65,000 cash prize! ... continued from Cover

From Lab to Patient, Garage to Market A BIOTECH BLUEPRINT FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Scan to Watch!

Successful entrepreneurship in the biotech space is the result of a unique combination of effective communication, teamwork and strategic partnerships with venture capitalists who can help bring an innovation from an initial idea to a market mainstay. This fundamental truth, along with much more, is explored in great detail in Episode 15 of Philip Crowley’s “From Lab to Patient, Garage to Market” podcast, which features a fascinating conversation with Jahanara Ali, Ph.D. In addition to being a life sciences industry veteran with experience in academia and company operations, Dr. Ali is a venture capital investor with a broad perspective on how today’s startup entrepreneurs can thrive in highly competitive and evolving industries. Given that finding the right venture capitalist is crucial to success, Dr. Ali recommends that startups carefully consider which ones to target for support. An ideal venture capitalist aligns with a company’s stage of development and area of interest. For example, if a startup is at the Series A stage (generally defined as when an early-stage company has shown positive progress in establishing its business model and exhibits clear signs of growth potential), it should seek support from investors focused on Series A funding. Additionally, startups must demonstrate a strong team framework, a clear business model and a deep understanding of their chosen market before pursuing venture capital funding. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Ali stresses that startup entrepreneurs must be willing to learn, especially if their business knowledge is not as deep as their expertise in other areas. “Many biotech innovators are scientists. If you’re a scientist and don’t know the business side, find mentors. People are very generous in New York; there are many amazing mentors who are doing it pro bono. They can help bridge the gaps in your knowledge.” Hosted by Crowley Law LLC Founder and Managing Partner Philip Crowley, the “From Lab to Patient, Garage to Market” podcast explores the critical issues and concerns impacting the biotech, life sciences and startup markets by offering fresh perspectives from industry leaders and experts. It is available on YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, all major podcast channels and at CrowleyLawLLC.com .

This is only a brief look at some of the extraordinary work being done throughout the life sciences and

technology fields to strengthen the cognitive health of millions. I hope you are as inspired by reading this article as I was in writing it. –Philip Crowley

4. Close Deals Faster With Proven Sales Psychology

The Closing Playbook Every High Performer Swears By Turn Conversations Into Commitments

In sales, the close is the moment that proves whether you’re a contender or just another voice in the inbox. Pros know closing isn’t luck, charm or timing. It’s strategy. It’s the ability to steer a conversation toward a confident “yes” without hesitation. If you want to increase conversions without losing momentum at the finish line, these proven closing methods will become your greatest competitive edge. THE ASSUMPTIVE CLOSE This technique thrives on sheer confidence and keeping the conversation moving forward. You behave as though the decision is already made, which naturally encourages the prospect to match your energy. Weave future-oriented questions into the conversation. Ask about start dates, delivery preferences, onboarding logistics and anything that subtly affirms the path

forward. Done well, it eliminates awkward pauses and keeps your momentum going.

THE SOMETHING-FOR-NOTHING CLOSE Giving something meaningful ( early access, added support or an extra feature ) activates a strong psychological trigger. Buyers naturally want to reciprocate when they feel they’ve been given something of real value. This works exceptionally well with prospects who have shown interest but haven’t crossed that final psychological gap. Your added value should be relevant and genuine, signaling that you’re invested in their success. THE BEN FRANKLIN CLOSE Some buyers need logic, not pressure. For them, laying out the advantages and drawbacks in a structured, transparent way helps neutralize anxiety and create clarity.

This approach works best when the buyer stalls in “analysis mode.” Together, you review every point and discuss real-world impact, ultimately demonstrating that the benefits outweigh the uncertainties. THE PUPPY DOG CLOSE Giving prospects a hands-on opportunity to test, explore or preview your solution builds familiarity and comfort. Whether it’s a pilot program, product sample, limited trial or temporary access, this method replaces theory with proof. Once prospects use the solution and envision it integrated into their daily workflow, the decision to move forward becomes far easier.
