ENROLLED • Cohort 5

LOCATION • Corvallis, Ore.

Since 2017, Deanna has been a faculty member at Oregon State University, where she teaches online and in-person courses in both Sustainability and Organic Agriculture. Her role at OSU also involves connecting community partners and colleagues to offer experiential learning opportunities for students. Deanna has collaborated with over 50+ local organizations and engaged with thousands of students resulting in over 15,000 hours of service to the community. Through her teaching, Deanna strives to create a transformative learning environment that emphasizes inclusive pedagogy, experiential learning, systems- thinking, and active engagement. She resonates with Joanna Macy’s idea of “power with” as a process, a verb, something we cultivate by supporting others, and Deanna works to embody that idea through her teaching and everyday actions. Critical reflection is also important to Deanna and as she continues to explore her personal positionality, she recognizes opportunities to use her systemic, societal privileges to challenge currently dominant narratives, work toward more equitable and sustainable systems, and promote social justice. The path to this doctoral program has been winding for Deanna and includes time as a school garden educator, farm manager, student teacher in New Zealand, rafting and climbing guide, and trail crew member. In addition to teaching, she is also a co-owner of Valley Rock Gym, a rock climbing gym in Corvallis, Ore., which allows her other opportunities for interacting with and contributing to her community. Deanna enjoys being outside and spends time gardening, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, foraging and preserving food, and engaging with her family, friends, and community.
