LOCATION • Prospect Park, Pa.

Shelley Collier grew up the daughter of a Unitarian Universalist minister, hearing the phases “inherent worth and dignity of every human being” and “interdependent web of all existence” for as long as she can remember. Though her life has led her down many paths, these two principles have always remained her touchstones and are what drew her to education, and to specifically to UWSP’s program. Shelley holds a B.A. from Temple University and a MEd. from Concordia University in Curriculum and Instruction, with a minor in Equity, Ethics and Justice. She has spent her professional educational career in middle and high schools, teaching a variety of subjects including ASL, English, theater, service learning and student support. What she is most proud of is being the founding faculty advisor the gay- straight alliance in the Catholic school where she now teaches. Shelley’s vision for sustainable education is one where teachers themselves are the recipients of transformative education. In a world where so much focus is on policy reform and student outcomes, providing sustainable practices for pre-service and in-service teachers is a vital component of ESD that cannot be overlooked. Shelley’s goal in this program is to work towards more effective and transformative teacher training experiences, specifically geared towards sex, gender, and orientation, in the expectation that this will transform not only the next generation of teachers, but also the students who move through their classrooms.
