Jenny Mitchell has always been inspired by Nelson Mandela’s quote, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” In order to achieve a sustainable world, we must first learn to understand each other and the world around us. Being open-minded to listening to different perspectives can help us build sustainable practices that will have a positive impact on social justice and the environment. Her childhood was rich in outdoor experiences, both in the lakes and forests of Wisconsin and the mountains and rivers in Montana. She has a strong connection to the natural world and believes that humans can live harmoniously in our environment while still maintaining many of our modern conveniences. Ever since her London study abroad experience with UWSP as an undergraduate, she has been passionate about international education and development as well as how our communities connect with our environments. Jenny believes that it is through travel and experiential education that we experience transformative learning. Most of her career has been spent outside of the U.S., with 15 years of education experience in international schools. She has taught in Colombia, Morocco, Singapore, Germany, Sudan and Croatia. Throughout that time, she has taught a wide range grade levels and curricula, though most of her work has been with the International Baccalaureate (IB). Being both a teacher and curriculum coordinator has allowed her to gain experience both in the classroom as well as in working with leading teams of teachers. Jenny has given presentations in the international community and worked with schools in strategic planning. Bridging the educational gap has always been a focus and she has supported public schools in her host country as well as worked with community programs. In addition to her work as an educator, Jenny also serves as an IB Workshop Leader and Site Visit Team member for schools around the world. Being involved in teacher education has always been a passion and she serves as an adjunct instructor for a graduate education program where she teaches courses to both in-service and pre-service educators.
