Larissa Sosa is an educator committed to learning about and facilitating holistic, transformational learning rooted in equity and empathy. She has taught in primary grades for the last 15 years, and has worked in a variety of educational systems including public, parochial, and independent schools. Core to her work in the classroom is the importance of modeling lifelong learning for her students and inspiring them to become advocates for change in their own spheres of influence and communities. The importance of building positive relationships with students and their families cannot be understated in this work. Larissa is also an advocate for experiential education, community building, and cooperative learning in the classroom as methods of empowering students to take ownership of their learning. The Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability program was a powerful draw for Larissa, as it forces one to imagine and work toward a paradigm shift away from mechanistic learning designed to support an unsustainable economy. Stephen Sterling notes that “Un-learning, re-learning, new learning are the essences of this challenge” (Sterling 88).As we face a dizzying array of challenges to the future of humanity, the power and hope in the notion of sustainable education cannot be understated. Through her work, Larissa hopes to explore barriers and expand access to sustainable education in the primary grades outside of STEM classes. When she is not teaching, she enjoys traveling, playing guitar and ukulele, and spending time with her husband, friends, and family.
