Justine Imelda Coho-Horvath became passionate about Educational Sustainability after years of teaching in three different school systems in Wisconsin. Observing firsthand the systemic challenges faced by minority students, she recognized a significant gap in policies that failed to amplify their voices in the 21st century. Possessing a double major in Family Consumer Science/Family Life Education and French Language Literature, as well as a Master of Science in Human and Community Resources, Justine understood that equity and inclusion were paramount for fostering a sustainable educational environment. Her 18 years of experience in the classroom revealed that many decisions made at the policy level overlooked the diverse needs of students. This realization ignited her desire to advocate for change, ensuring that all students, regardless of their cultural background, had access to equitable learning opportunities. Justine’s commitment to project-based learning and critical thinking became foundational in her curriculum development, engaging students in ways that cultivated their natural curiosity and empathy. She founded a multicultural celebration called Diner en Blanc (Dinner in White) to promote cultural awareness among students and their families, further underscoring her commitment to diversity and inclusion. Outside the classroom, her love for world travel and nature-based learning enriched her approach, illustrating her belief that hands-on experiences are vital for understanding sustainability. Justine’s journey reflects her deepseated desire to create a nurturing environment where each student can discover their identity and achieve their full potential.
