Alyse Howell is an environmental specialist working for Volusia County in Florida. She studies water quality within her county along with assisting agencies with marine mammal strandings, underwater cleanups and beach cleanups. She started a community outreach program for oyster reef restoration within the Indian River Lagoon and coordinates with other outreach and non-profit organizations within the community for volunteers. She has also been in the U.S. Coast Guard reserves since 2006 as a marine science technician specializing in pollution response and most recently assisting the U.S. Space Force in rocket launches. Alyse graduated with her B.S. from UWSP in biology and fisheries in 2010. She earned her M.S. in marine biology and coastal zone management from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2014. She currently lives in Debary, Fla., with her family. Alyse’s vision is to help citizens gain a better understanding of sustainability and how they can do their part to secure a healthy and thriving environment for the future. She is currently working on a “Living Dock” program which gives citizens living on the intercoastal waterway a means to become involved with oyster reef restoration by adding oyster mats to their docks. Oysters are critical to the water restoration efforts for filtering out algae. She is also in the beginning stages of an additional citizen outreach program to improve stormwater ponds by planting native vegetation. This will help with the nutrient overload in the ponds, help beautify them for homeowners and bring in native wildlife.
