Marti Martello Hanselman believes sustainability must begin with humanity by honoring the interconnected systems of people, technologies, and environments we co-create. Marti’s approach centers on connection, adaptability, and sustainability as a “do no harm” philosophy. Her passion for educational sustainability is rooted in lived experience and interdisciplinary practice across aerospace, applied neuroscience, psychology, human factors, grief and trauma work, social services, STEM, recreational therapy, computer science, and resilience engineering. From camps and military service to crisis response and consulting, she has worked in nontraditional learning environments where adaptability was not optional; therefore, dignitycentered design made all the difference. As an Applied Neuroadaptive Human-Systems Resilience Engineer, Marti aims to help people and systems become more resilient and sustainable. Some of her current work and future goals explore interdisciplinary frameworks that incorporate psychophysiological regulation, accessibility, human-computer interaction, and ethics in rapidly changing landscapes driven by AI, climate instability, inequity, and space exploration. Marti sees humans as systems of systems and believes that pedagogy and innovations that neglect human and ecological sustainability risk repeating harmful patterns for future generations. Marti views this program as a way to bridge disciplines and develop more inclusive, adaptable, and life-affirming systems on Earth and in space. By utilizing educational sustainability as a tool in both academic and nontraditional learning environments, while integrating applied research and systems thinking in high- stakes scenarios, she strives to support accessible innovation and resilient learning ecosystems that enable communities not only to survive disruption but also to co-create sustainable futures.
