Chelsea Pearson’s passion for educational sustainability began in her hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado, where participating in community tree-planting projects and environmental education conferences inspired her lasting commitment to sustainability practices. As a non-traditional student, Chelsea earned a B..S. in Biology with a concentration in Botany and a Master’s in Soil, Water and Ecosystem Sciences with a concentration in Agroecology and a minor in Agricultural Education Communication. Her graduate work focused on recontextualizing hydroponics within urban agroecological frameworks to strengthen localized food production, developing workshop guides for Extension and community outreach that emphasized “bottom-up” approaches involving community members as active participants. As an Adjunct Special Instructor at Northern Michigan University, Chelsea taught introductory biology and indoor agriculture laboratories, where she discovered that hands-on hydroponic experiences could be an excellent entry point for discussing broader sustainability concepts. Through her work with CSU/Larimer County Extension, she has seen how accessible approaches can engage diverse audiences with sustainable and regenerative practices. Chelsea has experience in project management focused on regenerative agriculture and carbon sequestration initiatives. Her background in research and entrepreneurship helps her coordinate sustainability projects while building effective stakeholder relationships. Through her doctoral research, Chelsea explores how expanding urban agroecological frameworks can democratize food justice education and scale movement participation through institutional access. She believes educational sustainability must be inclusive to effectively address global challenges, working to develop approaches that empower all learners to become agents of positive and lasting change.
