ENROLLED • Cohort 8

LOCATION • Oviedo, Fla.

Terina Nusinov’s journey towards educational sustainability started in her childhood. She was fortunate to grow up on 20 acres of “wild” property in east Central Florida, where she climbed trees, explored swamps and swam in the river that runs through her parent’s property. Camping, canoeing and hiking were common family activities. Her parents, especially her dad, taught her and her sisters about the importance of conservation and the interconnectedness of living and nonliving things. Terina’s upbringing and love of nature influenced her to pursue degrees in biology. After obtaining her master’s degree, Terina worked in the environmental consulting field, but eventually realized it was not her lifelong career. She reflected on what she enjoyed about her previous jobs and realized it was the teaching component. Terina attained a teaching position at Seminole State College in Central Florida and has taught biology there for 12 years. During this time, she has been fortunate to become involved in the study abroad program that brings students to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. As Terina’s teaching journey progressed, she began to see the need for change. This realization, coupled with her passion for teaching and learning, drew her to the UW-Stevens Point Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability. She envisions a future where teaching and learning are viewed holistically, and systems are transformed to better serve the needs of students. Her goal is to apply the knowledge she gains to enrich student learning in her classroom and the study abroad program.
