When James Viray received his bachelor’s degree in International Relations, he began what he thought was his dream job in international business leading the Europe market development for a start-up company. That all changed on a visit to Washington, D.C., when he became inspired by people working in jobs that he had never even heard of—in fields from micro-finance to conflict resolution. From that point on, James’ career has focused on making a global impact. After moving to Washington, James began his sustainable development career working for a global non-governmental organization to protect human rights and promote democratic development around the world. He worked across Africa, where he consistently observed the impact of multinational corporations on communities. This led to his interest in what was at the time the burgeoning field of corporate social responsibility. James’ approach to societal impact in his career has been to work for global organizations to leverage their worldwide footprints to drive change in sectors with the most critical challenges. He was the Director for the U.S. Department of State’s Office for Corporate Social Responsibility. He then went on to work on the sustainable development teams within Chevron and ConocoPhillips. Currently, James is the head of corporate sustainability for the global engineering firm GHD developing infrastructure for energy, water, and urbanization around the world. He is focused on building a sustainability culture and driving sustainability mindsets among the firm’s more than twelve thousand employees and believes Educational Sustainability will be key to achieving that.
