Samantha Swanson received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a Master of Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She is currently serving as a change-maker for employee engagement and retention with the State of Wisconsin. Through her education on trauma and culturally affirming practices, Samantha saw a thread connecting her experiences working in K-12 education in the U.S. and Korea, active duty military and their families, and the private sector. Having internalized the unwritten rule that success meant choosing one job until retirement, Samantha often felt deficient when facing burnout in roles that once filled her with purpose. Having witnessed the call to service lead to burnout in many others throughout a variety of disciplines, Samantha applied to the Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to focus on how equity, inclusion, transformative education, and systems change can create sustainability within the helping professions. Samantha dreams of a day when a call to service leads to holistic fulfillment, where helpers are not subject to traumatization by the systems they work in, and people in helping professions can experience career longevity versus facing burnout as an eventuality. She is excited to not only help create sustainable systems for helping professionals but to also see the social and economic growth in Wisconsin communities as trauma-informed and culturally affirming care becomes readily available.
