Rachel Tidd is an author, educator, entrepreneur, and leading advocate for integrating outdoor learning into elementary education. She reimagines instruction using nature, the outdoors, and the community, as tools for core academic instruction. She is the creator of Wild Math® and Wild Reading® curricula and the book Wild Learning: Practical Ideas to Bring Teaching Outdoors. She became interested in teaching and learning outside after watching her children thrive in forest preschool. Prior to founding Wild Learning, Rachel gained extensive teaching experience as an elementary and special education teacher and homeschooled her two children. Rachel received her M.S.Ed. in Special and Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education in New York City and a B.S. in Environmental Science and Analysis from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Rachel believes that one of the biggest obstacles facing the shift towards sustainability education is that too many children in the United States lack sufficient reading skills to enable them to tackle future challenges and design sustainable solutions that value both humans and the natural world. Rachel believes that to make progress in implementing educational sustainability, it is essential to provide teachers with support and resources through curricula that integrate both sustainability and academic skill instruction. She is drawn to sustainability education because it recognizes the importance of transformative education methods such as outdoor, participative, and place-based learning. She hopes to assist in integrating sustainability education with quality reading instruction by supporting the creation of resources for teachers and schools and studying their ability also to support academic skills.
