Telehealth: Serving Patients in These Troubling Times

Because of this, telehealth services are the best possible option for us at this time. By providing care for our patients virtually, as opposed to in person, we are able to keep both our patients and PT providers safe. For more information on our telehealth services and how they may benefit you, feel free to call us at 401-356-4777, schedule a telehealth appointment with our website chatbot, OR go to our telehealth appointment page link to schedule your virtual appointment! What is telehealth? You may be wondering what exactly telehealth is. Essentially, it is a way for us to make sure that our patients are still receiving the highest possible quality of care they need from a remote location. Telehealth services can be accessed via your smartphone or computer, and you will be able to perform your PT treatments from the comfort of your own home during this quarantine. You will also be able to track your progress and see how you are improving throughout your treatments – without coming directly to our clinic. At Nestor Physical Therapy, our telehealth services offer live consultation where you can meet and chat with your physical therapist about your treatment plan. At any point you can also message one of our physical therapists to ask questions or get advice about your condition. That being said, there are numerous conditions that can still be treated and improved via telehealth services, including, but not limited to. >>>

• Arthritis pain • Back pain • Headaches/migraines

• Post-surgical rehab • Respiratory issues • Sports medicine/athletic training • Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s Disease, and other chronic conditions • Injury rehab • And much more In addition to allowing for the practice of social distancing, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, telehealth also has other benefits for patients. As stated by the American Physical Therapy Association, just a few of these include: • Patients typically in clinical or hospital settings could be managed from their homes • Quicker screening, assessment, and referrals can improve care coordination within collaborative delivery models such as accountable care organizations or patient-centered medical homes

• Telehealth can facilitate consultation between providers or in clinical education

Patient Success Spotlights

“Over the last several weeks of coming to Nestor Physical Therapy, I’ve begun to live more of a normal life. I came in with pretty severe nerve pain in my thigh and tingling in my legs. I wasn’t able to sit at my desk, in the car, or on my bike but am doing much better now having learned some great stretches & exercises. I feel like my back and core is stronger than it has been in decades. While I have some episodic pain, I am able to get through it much better and bounce back pretty quickly. Thank you very much to all the team members at Nestor PT! I am looking forward to doing a lot more outdoors this Spring!” - Bill Mott “Thank you very much to all the team members at Nestor PT! Spring Wings

May is “National Grilling Month” and many of you are getting your grills out for the first time (some of you might grill all winter). Here is an easy recipe to fire up on the grill. Chicken wings are a staple of backyard cookouts and can come in a variety of flavors. But no one wants to stand over the grill turning wings to keep them from burning! Season the wings with your favorite seasoning. I used my homemade BBQ rub. It is a combo of sweet with a little heat. Seasonings can be as simple as kosher salt, cracked black pepper and paprika for color or elaborate as a mix of freshly chopped herbs (my wife likes the combo of fresh chopped thyme, rosemary, sage, lemon zest, salt and pepper…this mix goes great on any kind of chicken). Set up charcoal or gas grill for indirect cooking (no heat under food...see pic). Indirect cooking allows the wings to cook without you standing over the grill while the wings cook. I like to spray the wings 2-3 times while they cook with apple juice or beer. It keeps them from drying out and it adds additional flavor. Use whatever goes with the seasoning on your wings (Options: beer, cider, pineapple juice, or white wine/lemon juice combo). Cook the wings for about 45 minutes. The wings will be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside…and a little smoky if you used a charcoal grill. Wings are ready to eat hot off the grill! But if you want to add another level of flavor…heat up your favorite hot sauce or BBQ sauce in a pan right on the grill or on a side burner while the wings cook. Put the cooked wings in a large bowl and toss with the some of the warm hot sauce or BBQ sauce. I tossed the wings with a peach and habanero hot sauce and served with blue cheese dressing.

Make sure you eat a wing or two before serving because when you turn around, they’ll be gone!! Enjoy.

Arthritis In The Neck

Cedar Planked Smoked Cheese

The problem with arthritis is the loss of range of motion in the neck joints. As bone wears on bone, the surface of the bones actually start to c hange shape. This thins the bones in the neck in some parts leading to a loss of height between the bones. Due t abnormal wear and tear, new bone forms where it shouldn’t, creeping into the holes where the spinal cord p asses through. In addition it can rub on the nerves out to your neck, sho ulders, arms and even hands. This can lead to a condition called cervical spinal stenosis, which can be quite painful. What can be done to help neck arthritis? While pain medications can help control pain, they don’t address the root cause of the pain, which i s poor strength and lack of normal movement. The neck joints on the side of the spine normally experience wear and tear over the years. However, wh en this wear and tear is accelerated due to poor posture, weakness or inju ry, this can lead to limited, painful range of motion. In addition, with neck arthritis, the smaller muscles that guide the m otions of the neck become weaker, eventually leading tomore rubbing and ar thritis. By gently stretching these tight and restricted joints with specific ha nds on therapy and exercises, range of otion can be returned. While physical t herapy can ot restore the cartilage or change the bony structure, it can ce rtainly help your neck move better, become stronger, reduce pain and give y ou the p wer to stay healthier longer. Try this imple test. See if you have restricted cervical joints. Stand with your back against the wall. Can you touch the back of your head to th e wall while keeping your chin level? If you cannot, then your neck joints are limited and you need physical therapy to restore the range f motion.

This is a great appetizer for the holidays. It looks fancy but is to make. Your guests will think you are a gourmet chef!

quick and easy

The cheese can be smoked on a gas grill if you make a smoker

pack. I used the

charcoal grill.

You will need a cedar plank, camembert cheese or a brie (soft c

reamy cheese),

pepper jelly, and 1-2 jalapenos.

Place the plank on the grill for 1-2 minutes a side. You will see some grill marks and you will start to smell the aroma of the cedar plank. (See the grill marks in the picture). Spread the pepper jelly on the cheese. Slice the jalapeno in ha lf, remove the seeds if you like it on the mild side, and arrange jalapeno slices on top of the cheese. Slice the jalapeno crosswise with the seeds if you like it spicy. Place the cheese in the plank. Place the plank on the grill (indirect heat) no flame under the plank. (See picture). Add a few wood chips to the charcoals. Use smoker pack if using gas grill. Co ok about 10 minutes until the cheese becomes soft. Some of the cheese will start to ooze out.

Is your neck pain affecting your balance? Have you ever seen a person with th ir head protruding forward and their body bent over? This can be subtle or quite noticeable. With neck pain, limited neck posture res ults in loss of balance. Just pull anyone by their nose and you will see th ey will falter forward. This is because the normal lines of gravity through th e body change when the spine posture changes. If you or someone you kno w has poor balance, it could be a problem with their posture. G t your neck moving and feeling b tter. Call us to learn more abo ut our programs today!
