Welcome!
We are excited to invite you to join us for the 46th Anniversary Bull Sale at J-C Angus Ranch, east of Moriarty!! We plan to sell over 65 bulls and 9 heifers on Saturday, March 21st. We feel like we are making progress and this is the best set of bulls and females we have ever offered, but we mainly just enjoy getting to see all of our old friends and making new ones!! With record highs at the sale barns, optimism is coming back to the industry. You can’t go to a steak house in Albuquerque and not stand in line. We feel confident that beef is always going to be in high demand, which is why we continue to work to produce cattle that will work well on any ranch with genetics focusing on fertility, feed efficiency, calving-ease, growth, and carcass quality. As technology becomes an even bigger part of our daily lives, we are excited to see science becoming a bigger part of the beef industry, as well. Feed costs are arguably the biggest cost in getting an animal to market. With the Grow Safe System in Tucumcari, we no longer have to “guess” or “make assumptions” about what an animal’s feed efficiency is. We can now test to see if our assumptions were correct. They weren’t. There are big differences between individual animals. If a cow is small, that doesn’t automatically mean she is efficient! She may be, but you cannot improve what you do not measure. We feel strongly that testing and selecting for this trait will make improvements in any herd, not just for the animals going to the feedlot, but in the cow herd as well. This improvement in genetics is not only beneficial for the stockman, but it benefits every part of the industry, which helps all of us in the long run.
As you look at the animal chart (opposite), you can see the big differences between individual animals and their performance, as well as the impact that could have on the industry. With record high prices in the market, not having this tested information costs the rancher money. We want to change that. All of our natural sires have proven feed efficiency through testing. As you look through the data we provide, you’ll see that we have taken advantage of the technology available, from DNA testing, ultrasound, and feed efficiency testing to bring bulls and heifers that will add profits to your bottom line. As you can see from this chart, if Bull A and Bull D were steers in the feedlot and were grown from 700 to 1400 lbs.: Bull A would have eaten 5,859.67 lbs. less feed (2.93 tons less!) and hit 1400 lbs with a 4 week less time on feed! Bull A would have saved you $549 in feed and yardage. Why does that matter to the commercial cattle operation? We know the calves in your operation will not be identical to these bulls we are offering, but we do know the Feed Efficiency is a highly heritable trait that will be passed to the calves they sire. Assuming a bull will have 100 calves in his lifetime, the value to the industry of bull A is $10,981 more than Bull D. Not only does Bull A add value to the beef industry, we believe more efficient daughters will also perform better in your pastures, requiring less supplemental feed and utilizing whatever feed you have more efficiently. That seems pretty important to us!

We will work with you to deliver as soon as possible after the sale. Any additional miles over 300 will have an additional $3/mile charge. SUPPLEMENTAL SHEETS Supplement sheets will be available with updated EPDs, yearling weights, yearling ratios, scrotal circumferences, ultrasound data, and feed efficiency performance on bulls tested.
LOSS OF USE GUARANTEE J-C Angus Ranch will cover 50% of all bulls if they are injured during the first breeding season – the first 90 days after the bulls have been turned out. We will offer a credit of 50% of the cost of the bull, minus salvage value, towards the purchase of a bull at a future sale or a replacement, if one is available at the ranch (ie, Bull price * 50% – salvage = credit towards purchase). Any injured bull must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. We ask that you notify us as soon as possible after the bull is injured and before the injured bull has been sold for salvage. This guarantee is good through September 20, 2025. This excludes death by natural causes. Should you choose, you may purchase mortality insurance from an agent of your choice. ANIMAL HEALTH All bulls and heifers have been vaccinated with Bovishield Gold and for Blackleg, and they have been poured with Ivermectin. All animals are free of any known defects. INFORMATION AND SALE TERMS All bulls sold will have passed a breeding soundness exam and have tested negative for Trichomoniasis and PiBVD. J-C Angus Ranch will retain 1/3 semen interest of all bulls, unless otherwise noted during sale day. The buyer retains full possession of the bull. Any semen collected at the request of J-C Angus Ranch will be at the buyer’s discretion and J-C Angus’s expense. The buyer will retain full salvage value of the bull. We are so blessed to have so many people who have encouraged us with their words and prayers, as well as being willing to get dirty with us and get the job done. First and foremost, we are so thankful that God has allowed us to live out here and be a part of the agriculture community. He has answered every prayer, not always the way we want, and has been our source of peace and confidence in this venture. Our family ( Joe, Rebecca, Abi & Samuel Isbell, Josh, Sarah & Declan Yu, Josh, Morgan, Adelynn & Ivy Heckendorn, and Caleb Heckendorn) all work together to do what needs to be done on the ranch and just enjoying that time together, and we are grateful for that kind of relationship. Harry and Dixie Heckendorn, along with Ralph & Faye Bell began the registered herd in 1980 and gave us the opportunity to buy the registered cattle and continue the legacy in 2002. Harry keeps an eye on the cattle in Tucumcari and is always there with great supervision and wisdom when we’re working cattle. Laurence Brockman is a young man we’ve known for over 25 years, and we always appreciate his help with welding projects and working cattle. We also want to thank the Valigura family (Jordan, Amy, Autumn, Aubrey, & Theo) for their help and excellent care with their satellite herd. Robin Gray has been a great AI technician who not only has helped us move our breeding in a positive direction, but he always has some good stories to share over lunch. LT Sharp has been a great help with the Tucumcari cows – feeding, tagging and weighing calves. Dr. Sarah Loya has been with us ever since she graduated from vet school and provides health advice and uses ultrasound to pregnancy test our females each fall, as well as managing her satellite herd. She grew up on the ranch before we purchased it, and she is a pleasure to work with – always laughing and joking so that a hard day of working cattle seems like a trip to the zoo.

This son of Connealy Emerald (pictured left) was a bull we raised and retained as a herd sire. He was our heaviest calf at weaning at 842 lbs. adjusted 205 day wt of 820, ratio 121. He went on to perform very well on test at Tucumcari, gaining 4.64 lbs. per day (rto 120.69) with a WDA of 3.90 (rto 122.39), and converted 6.01 lbs. of feed per lb. of gain (rto 120.23), placing him 3rd overall index in the 22-23 bull test. He scanned 5.77 IMF and 17.5 Ribeye. He ended the test at 1508 lbs. (First bull in history of test to exceed 1500 lbs!) BW and gained 4.02 lbs. per day on test. He scanned a 106 rto for IMF and 102 for RE. He is extremely easy calving yet has top growth EPDs and really good marbling, a true curve bender.
