ABOUT IVY TECH Ivy Tech Community College is Indiana’s largest public postsecondary institution and the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college system, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Ivy Tech has campuses throughout Indiana serving thousands of students annually online. It serves as the state’s engine of workforce development, offering associate degrees, short-term certificate programs, industry certifications, and training that aligns to the needs of the community. The College provides seamless transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana, as well as out of state, for a more affordable route to a Bachelor’s degree.
HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Ivy Tech Community College awards Honorary Degrees in College and Community Service to select individuals each year. The following individual has shown exemplary service to the College and/or the community and is being recognized with an honorary degree during today’s ceremony.
Chief Malone joined the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1986. He has been promoted through competitive promotion processes and has held every Merit Rank in the department up to and including Battalion Chief. Chief Malone has served as a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief in the Operations/Suppression division of the department. His administrative assignments include Assistant Director of Training, Fire Marshal, Division Chief of Executive Services, and Assistant Chief of Fire. CHIEF ERNEST V. MALONE CHIEF OF FIRE, INDIANAPOLIS FIRE DEPARTMENT
His current responsibilities as the Chief of Fire include: overall command and responsibility for all functions of the department. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: the development of IFD policy relating to suppression operations, health and safety, training, special operations and emergency medical services. Additionally, the Chief of Fire has direct supervision of the Assistant Chief and Deputy Chiefs assigned to oversee the major functional bureaus of the department, such as Administration, Operations, Logistics, Community Risk Reduction, or other divisions/sections that may be initiated at the direction of the Chief of Fire. Chief Malone meets with other executive staff personnel to outline strategic planning initiatives that seek to identify the goals and objectives designed to position the department for a productive and sustainable future. Chief Malone holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, and a Master’s Degree in Management. Additionally, Chief Malone has completed a twelve-month program offered by Indiana University’s Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Development and was awarded the designation as a Hoosier Fellow in 2011. Chief Malone is a graduate of the National Fire Academy, completing 17 different onsite training courses through the United States Fire Administration. Additionally, he has achieved the highly regarded and prestigious certification as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, becoming the first member of the Indianapolis Fire Department to achieve this designation. Chief Malone holds many certifications, including Fire Officer IV, Instructor II/III, NFPA Incident Safety Officer, Hazmat Technician, Basic Emergency Rescue Technician (BERT), Master Scuba Diver, Rope Rescue Technician IV, Fire Inspector I/II, Fire Investigator I, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, & 800, and many more. He serves as a certified Incident Commander on the Region Five All Hazards Incident Management Team.
GRADUATE SPEAKER
Each year, Ivy Tech Indianapolis selects one outstanding student to serve as the Graduate Speaker for Commencement. This student is chosen through a competitive application and audition process, open to all graduating students. Applicants are invited to share their personal Ivy Tech journey, highlighting academic achievements, challenges overcome, and future aspirations. A committee of faculty and staff reviews the submissions and auditions to select a speaker who embodies the spirit of Ivy Tech and can inspire their fellow graduates during the ceremony.
AMIRA ALI
GRADUATE, ASSOCIATE OF GENERAL STUDIES
Amira Ali is a 2026 graduate of Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis, earning her Associate of General Studies at just 19 years old. Originally from New York, Amira moved to Indiana shortly after graduating high school in 2024, having completed her diploma early as a junior, a significant academic achievement that reflects her drive and determination. As a first-generation college student, she brings resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose to her educational journey.
At Ivy Tech, Amira has been actively engaged both inside and outside the classroom. Through the Federal Work Study program, she serves as an executive assistant for the School of Arts, Sciences & Education, where she supports day-to-day operations and campus initiatives while developing strong organizational and communication skills. She also serves as the marketing representative for the Robotics Club, helping to promote the group’s work and connect with the broader campus community. Amira’s involvement extends across campus through programs such as Ivy Life, tutoring services, and student support initiatives, all of which have contributed to her growth and confidence. Her experiences as both a student and a college employee have given her a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for the opportunities available to those willing to pursue them. Known for her perseverance and willingness to try new things, Amira has navigated challenges with resilience and continues to grow from each experience. She plans to continue her education at Marian University, where she will pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Amira is honored to serve as the 2026 Ivy Tech Indianapolis Commencement Graduate Speaker and looks forward to encouraging her fellow graduates to embrace challenges, believe in their potential, and keep moving forward.

To our graduates, their families, and friends: Welcome to Commencement 2026! We are pleased to commend the success of our graduates, as you represent the reason the College exists—to produce graduates who are well-prepared graduates to enter the world of work or to transfer to a four-year college. As you depart Ivy Tech, I challenge you to allow your academic experiences at the College to serve as the foundation upon which you build productive careers. Allow your social interactions with faculty, staff, administrators, and your fellow students to guide you as you interact with individuals in the workplace and in society, and allow the College’s commitment to you to be a model for your commitment back to yourself, your family, your community, and your alma mater. The torch has been passed to you with the expectation that you will hold it higher and carry it farther than those who walked before you. My greatest wish is that you will do for the world what your alma mater has tried to do for you— impart knowledge, share wisdom, nurture, and guide, and maintain the highest ethical standards in all that you do. Be courageous and go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

*Cum Laude Students graduating with honor or praise, completing with a cumulative 3.5 to 3.749 GPA during their last fall semester. **Magna Cum Laude Students graduating with great honor or praise, completing with a cumulative 3.75 to 3.999 GPA during their last fall semester. ***Summa Cum Laude Students graduating with the highest honor or praise, completing with a cumulative 4.0 GPA during their last fall semester. HONOR ORGANIZATIONS The Alpha Tau Xi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society recognizes students for their academic achievements. Membership is by invitation only and requires the student to have a 3.5 grade-point average or higher. Phi Theta Kappa members wear golden honor stoles at graduation. The Ivy Tech Honors College is a selective honors program that helps students reach their academic and transfer goals. Students in the Honors College program have been accepted to dozens of public and private colleges and universities not only in Indiana, but across the country. The Ivy Tech Student Leadership Academy provides opportunities to Ivy Tech students to develop their leadership and professional skills while learning more about the history and traditions of the College. Members wear Ivy Tech medallions. HISTORY OF COMMENCEMENT REGALIA In medieval Europe, all townspeople wore robes, which varied greatly according to wealth and rank. Distinctive gowns represented various trades. They survive today in the gowns of the judiciary, religious orders, and in academic costume. In the United States, usage has been standardized by the Intercollegiate Code.
