WHAT’S HAPPENING
LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Season Greetings from Joseph Charter School,
1ST | MRS. BLANKENSHIP First Grade studied the branches of the military in honor of Veterans Day. Students learned the specialties of each branch as well as the similarities and differences. During show and tell students brought in photos, metals, uniforms, and stories of family members who are Veterans. 2ND | MRS. LYMAN Second graders have been learning coding in a fun and interactive way by programming and experimenting with robots during STEAM. This month, we’ll investigate earth changes over time due to earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides. We are adding two digit numbers and regroupoing, and and we’ll be learning about Holidays form around the globe. We’re excited to build gingerbread houses and go caroling at the Alpine House. 3RD | MRS. OLSON During the month of November third graders have been working on mastering multiplication facts, focusing on building our fluency with a positive math mindset. Throughout the week, we use dice, decks of cards, and games to practice our automaticity. Building math fluency is important so our class is successful in our math understanding. We are also focused on our vocabulary understanding by creating gestures, pictures and synonyms, and a fun vocabulary word of the day necklace! 4TH | MRS. GROVER November flew by in a flurry of multiplication facts, number patterns, word problems and the elements of personal narratives in both reading and writing. Students developed ideas to write their own personal narratives and continue to refine their skills as authors in their journals. We also move forward in our study of Native American culture and the distinct land formations of Oregon. To top it off, Mrs. Koehn took us to Imnaha to study the rock formations of canyons. 5TH | MISS. ROBYN The 5th grade classroom was full of water and fractions this month. The weather allowed us to learn so much outside about water turbidity, pH, oxygen saturation levels, and temperature. Wallowa Resources also taught us all about watersheds and we made our own in class. Besides studying water and the water cycle we have managed to work daily on decimals and now fractions. . 6TH | MRS. HITE We have been busy with many different activities as well as our studies. We recently began a novel study on the White Giraffe by Lauren St. John. Through this novel we will focus on vocabulary, similes, metaphors, character traits, foreshadowing and inference. For social studies we are wrapping up our country presentations in the next few weeks and from there move into a review of the US history. Our writing focus will be summaries in the beginning, middle and end of stories.
We want to wish all of our students, staff, families, and commu- nity a happy holiday season! It feels like the year is flying by, but lots of great things are happening in the Joseph School District. Mrs. Koehn is starting a Lego Robotics team. Our CTE teachers just received training on our new CNC Router Machine and our new CNC Plasma Machine. Our teachers just had a terrific writ- ing training with Yolanda Westerberg this past Friday. We are excited to let you know that our Strategic Plan is complete and we will be sending it out this week. On December 18th we will go over our strategic plan, showcase school clubs and courses, and serve dinner for anyone interested. The event will start at 6 PM. Winter sports have started. The Jo-Hi Wrestling Tournament is January 3rd/4th and if you are around the gym will be packed and full of energy. If you would like to volunteer at the wrestling tournament, please reach out to Tim Kiesecker. You can email him at tim.kiesecker@josephcharter.org or just call the school at 541-432-7311.
Again, the Joseph School District would like to wish you all a happy holiday season!

IMNAHA | MRS. WARNOCK We have spent the last month feeling extra “thankful” at the Imnaha Bridge School! We wrote letters to our local veterans expressing our gratitude, getting a tour of our local post office in the process. We traveled to JCS for their delicious Thanksgiving feast, and spent some time with the amazing Ms. Jen in the library. We cooked Thanksgiving soup for our families, and built a gratitude tree where we all expressed what we were thankful for! PRE K | MRS. MCWATERS All 16 kids are well on their way to knowing the names and sounds for 10 letters! We had a full day of Halloween costumes, party, and fun that concluded with a hay pyramid and tunnel, thank you to Mandy James for the straw and Fire Science for the delivery! Nov kicked off with conferences and flew by with Harvest Feast and Thankful Turkeys, and be on the lookout for our elves, Elvie and Elvis! K | MRS. SHETLER This month we have been learning bunches in Kinderland! We are learning to blend sounds into words and build our fluency with speed reading. We are learning measurement and comparing objects by greater than or less than. We were able to take our first field trip to Building Healthy Families and meet the other kindergarteners from around Wallowa County! We read books, made a craft, and of course enjoyed some ice cream! We would like to thank Building Healthy Families for a great event.

close to 20 students in each practicum. We also held our annual FFA alumni drive-thru bbq in No- vember where we served close to 300 dinners. SCIENCE Students engineered vehicles that moved only by using New- ton’s 3rd Law. ART Students are learnin construc- tion/craftsmanship techniques, making aesthetic choices, and practicing critical thinking skills through practical application in their pinch/coil pot creations. LIBRARY As we enter the busy holiday sea- son, I hope you all find time to get cozy with your kids and a good book. Reading to your children (of all ages!) is critically important for developing their own independent reading skills. There will be a special prize for those students who read and turn in a book re- view after the Christmas break– further details to come.
make their body structure work for them to survive and built models of how they prepare for winter. 4th graders trekked down Imnaha Canyon to find evidence of erosion. and drew detailed models of the rock cy- cle. 5th graders participated in a riverside ecosystem study as they collected different types of macroinvertebrates. They have graphed their findings along with producing a model of the possible food webs in the area. And finally, 6th graders launched into an inquiry while roaming the Zumwalt prairie looking for evidence of water and its link to the abundance of life that can be found there and used geological models to write stories. K-6 also participated in pre-cod- ing activities with the Bee Bots. The robots can be given a set of commands that “code” it to move the BOTS through a specific course with obstacles, to develop skills in sequencing for more advance applications. AG SCIENCE On November 13th we had a great day at ag sales. Overall Our Greenhand team earned 1st place and our advanced team placed 2nd. Students from 11 different chapters participated from our district today, with
MUSIC & THEATER In October, JCS was honored to host the Oregon Shakespeare Festival School Visit Program. Two teaching artists from OSF performed “The Seven Ages of Man” and a portion of “Julius Caesar” for students in grades 4-12. Students were then able to attend a workshop where they further studied “Julius Caesar”. STEAM During the fall quarter, ea class had to develop a type of model that would communicate their understanding of the process. Kindergarteners learned the effects of the Sun’s heat on light and dark colors. With their knowledge, they built models of playground surfac- es and shade structures that would keep students cool while out at recess. First graders- made observations of the Sun’s movement to try and figure out how the Earth revolves around the Sun and created models of what the Earth’s tilt would look like on their birthday. 2nd graders traveled to Marr Pond to study animals and construct model habitats. The 3rd graders hiked a trail near Wallowa Lake to observe how chipmunks
