Medicine Wheel Teaching Circles
Getting Together & Learning About Our Nation’s Heritage What is the significance of the Medicine Wheel? The Medicine Wheel or “sacred circle’ holds an important historical place in Indigenous culture. Some people believe that it represents the four directions---north, south, east and west. Others believe it represents the circles of life. Yet others believe it represents the seasons. Regardless of the different interpretations, the Medicine Wheel has been used by generations of North American native peoples for health and healing—as a tool for learning and teaching—and for communication between the elders and the youth. Over the years, we have been asked to provide this product by a number of schools—both Indigenous and non-Indigenous--- who want to be able to use this as a teaching tool within a school environment. Working with our suppliers, we have developed a versions of the Medicine Wheel that we believe can be used as the teaching tool that has been so much in demand. While Medicine Wheels can vary in size, we can find no evidence that there is a “correct” size, but we believe that the 10’ circle is appropriate for use in Learning Commons or Front Atrium areas of Secondary schools and be large enough to enable teachers to include enough students to get the level of discussion they require. Our research indicates that the colors we have chosen represent the most common colors presented in today’s literature. However, we acknowledge that other colors are also appropriate and are used in a many North American communities.
We believe this new product can provide a central focal point in today’s schools and can help carry on the teaching and learning that has been inspired by generations of North American Indigenous peoples.
