Three demands from consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies — single source solutions, increased machine versatility and a move to flexible packaging — are pushing the packaging industry toward un- precedented heights, according to the 2017 State of the Industry – US Packaging Machinery report and infographic from PMMI,The Associa- tion for Packaging and Processing Technologies. Healthy Increase The infographic serves as a visual snapshot of the report and shows a 4.8 percent increase in the U.S. packaging machinery market from 2015 to 2016, with a total market value of $9.8 billion. “The forecast for the packaging machinery market continues to be robust,” said Jorge Izquierdo, Vice President, Market Development, PMMI. “We anticipate growth in major market segments such as pharmaceuticals, as well as food and beverage. Factors such as popula-

will see its North American debut at Labelexpo Americas, that incorporates the latest in clean-hand technology. “Clean-hand technology is the key to the success of our new FA line of presses, and it is the reason these machines are so easily adapted by today’s workforce,” said Paul Teachout, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Nilpeter. “A generation raised on disruptive technologies expects that level of technol- ogy from all manufacturing companies. Our new FA press The demo center at Nilpeter’s Cincinnati, Ohio, headquarters allows visitors to see first-hand demonstrations of the company’s clean-hand technologies, which are the key to the success of its FA line, according to Vice President of Sales & Marketing Paul Teachout.

West Essex Adds Esko CDI For Dupont EASY Plates West Essex Graphics (WEG), in Fairfield, New Jersey, is expanding operations and strengthening service of- ferings by installing an additional Esko CDI (Cyrel Dig- ital Imager) 5080 HD unit with Pixel+ technology for use with DuPont Cyrel EASY flexo plates. “With continuing demand for our products and ser- vices, expanding our manufacturing footprint was es- sential if we were going to stay ahead of the pack,” said Tom Guth, Principal,West Essex Graphics.“Once that decision was made, looking to DuPont Advanced Printing (DuPont) and Esko, our long-standing part- ners, to make this happen was very easy.” “West Essex Graphics is a great example of a tradeshop that is utilizing the benefits DuPont Cyrel EASY plates offer to them as well as to their printer customers,” said Shyamal Desai, Americas Marketing Manager, DuPont Advanced Printing. “They are en- abling printers to expand into markets previously inac- cessible due to higher quality demands, thanks to their customer focus and the use of Cyrel EASY plates.” By adding their second Esko 5080 CDI Spark,West Essex Graphics has substantially increased their ca- pacity for Cyrel flexo plate imaging.

is operated by a tablet with virtually no knobs or handles on the machine. All print controls are now managed through motion control motors.” The FA press is, according to Nilpeter, designed for the modern, intuitive press operator. This approach eliminates previous manual controls; quick lock han- dles are replaced with touch screen controls, all printing unit covers can open individually or simulta- neously through the automation, and the gearless plate sleeves have an automatic cleaning function be- fore release. Industry 4.0, the idea of automation and data ex- change in manufacturing technologies, is no mere trend. It’s a seismic shift in the way manufacturing will proceed in the future. Industry 4.0 is predicated on the idea of the “smart factory”, in which advances

in technology allow for enormous increases in pro- ductivity and quality. In its simplest terms it refers to the fourth industrial revolution. “By being early adapters of this kind of technolo- gy we can help our customers operate their busi- nesses with Industry 4.0 in mind, as well,” said Teachout. “Internally, we have eliminated a dozen conventional work centers and replaced them with two fully automated machining centers running lights out operations. We are not talking 4.0, we are living it. We are doing more with less in both human resources and equipment.” Industry 4.0 Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things leads to a host of benefits, according to Teachout, not least of which is the possibility to connect and exchange data with mul- tiple global manufacturing facilities. But there’s another benefit that Teachout believes will have possibly the Each print station on the FA press is cast from a single piece of steel, with seven motors mounted to each station.

Multi-Color Partners With Talkin’ Things

Flexo Market News

I NTERNET D IRECTORY

Multi-Color Corporation has formed a strategic part- nership with Talkin’ Things, a smart packaging sys- tem. The system enables brands to communicate with consumers, protect against counterfeiting, and track products throughout the supply chain. With this agreement, MCC and Talkin’ Things have established a strategic partnership to raise awareness among brand owners about the rapidly growing trend of connecting products to the Internet of Things (IoT) through packaging. A long-term agreement has been signed to provide joint smart packaging solutions like NFC/RFID, Augmented Reality, IoT sensors and anti- theft protection based on EAS technology. As a result of this cooperation, MCC and Talkin’ Things are strategically focused on connectivity and joining the new world of smart packaging. The old world of traditional packaging was characterized with loyalty to the distribution channels, purchasing data from retailers, counterfeiting and food waste is- sues and unchangeable promotions within one label. The new world, based on smart packaging, offers dig- itally extended labels protected against counterfeit- ing and refilling, real-time promotions management, direct communication with end customers, personal- ized mobile promotions and rewarding real cus- tomers directly through the product, which increases loyalty to the brand. FINAT To Host Technical Seminar In Barcelona FINAT will be hosting its biennial Technical Semi- nar, March 7-9, in Barcelona, Spain. Andy Hobsbawm, Founder and Chief Marketing Of- ficer of IoT smart products platform EVRYTHNG, will give his insight into the technical side of the way smart products can transform brand relationships, business operations, and service experiences. He will also explore how labels and packaging are the digital bridge between the physical product and a cloud- powered universe of real-time data and software ap- plications. This is just one of the many topics that will be dis- cussed at this year’s event. Others include the impact of end-to-end connectivity on optimizing the produc- tion chain, the gains possible with workflow automa- tion, the ways of tackling issues in digital automation and the importance of real-time data collection and communication. Full details of the FINAT Technical Seminar 2018 can be found www.finat.com .

most lasting effect on the industry: increased techno- logical advancements will attract young, forward-think- ing people to the converting industry. “It will ultimately lead more young people to pursue the converting industry as a career,” Teachout said. “The age-old image of a printing press operator wear- ing an apron, covered in ink are still prevalent. Nilpeter is actively participating in workforce develop- ment programs with associations, high schools and vo- cational schools so that students understand not only the vitality of today’s printing industry but how mod- ernized and technology-based it has become. It is a very sophisticated industry and offers the chance of a rewarding career. By focusing on clean-hand technolo- gy, Nilpeter can reach an entirely new workforce.” Reaching that new workforce allows Nilpeter, and its customers, to eliminate a problem long plaguing the printing and packaging industry: the skills gap. “The necessity of embracing new technology is demonstrating very clearly in the ever growing skills gap in the converting industry. Even if a company wanted to retain and keep older technology, they would find it increasingly difficult to find skilled oper- ators. Young workers entering the workforce simply have no idea how to operate older, traditional strictly analog, machines. But they are very well suited for the advanced technology that Nilpeter is introducing.” Clean-Hand Technology In addition to clean-hand technology the FA line of- fers multi-operator interface, allowing several job functions to be controlled at once by multiple opera- tors, and on multiple tablets. All job recipes can be saved and recalled for future runs, minimizing make ready time and waste. The presses additionally feature a vertical auto-lock system, which automatically locks in the printing sleeve; servo driven chill rollers with anti-slip surface treatment; custom-built configuration; CLEANINKING system, which offers a consistent ink film thickness over a large ink chemistry gamut; and multi-substrate printing, including flexible packaging films, polymer films, metallic films, paper and tag. The U.S. headquarters of Nilpeter underwent a nearly $6 million upgrade last year to modernize and automate its facility. Everything from machin- ing to quality control are now done through au- tomation, with no human interaction and no possibility of error. “Science has replaced craft,” said Teachout. “Every- thing is measured, everything is controlled, every- thing is repeatable.”
