Why are my Mums budding to early?
I did not do a Florel spray, and my buds are fairly large, what can I do? Mums are heavy feeders, and you can push new growth through the premature budding by using a high feed of 350 ppm. A 20-20-20 or 20-10-20 fertilizer will work. It is recommended to start as soon as you see the buds develop. Continue feed- ing till you see desired growth. Once crop is at desired height and nearing finish a reduced feed is best. 150 – 200 ppm 17-5-17 or similar. The main goal is to reduce phosphorus for better crop toning. Should I pinch my Mums after planting? Today’s varieties do not need a pinch if growing a natural flowering crop. It is not really necessary to pinch black cloth production either.
How do I speed up my crop to bloom?
Mums are short day plants and initiate flowering in mid-July as the days start to reduce natural day length. Mums are classified in categories as to when they will naturally bloom. Very early Season - blooms around September 6 Early - blooms around September 12-18th Mid Season - blooms around September 20th to 27th Late Season - blooms around September 28th to October 5th and Latest Season - will bloom after the first part of October . Picking varieties to meet your desired finish date is the only way to assure flowering on your time schedule out- side of black clothing the crop.
Basic stress on the plants such as cool nights less than 60 F, allowing to dry down too much and excessive night- time heat 75+F, can trigger premature budding. This will cause the plants to be much smaller than desired. A solution in preventing this is applying Florel one week after planting. This can help to reduce the likelihood of buds setting too early. If temperatures continue to be an issue after this initial application, another one can be made 7 to 10 days later. This will allow the plant to stay vegetative longer which will allow for more growth. How do I apply Florel? Foliar spray of 500 to 750 ppm with a water solution around a pH of 4, sprayed either early morning or late in the day. This allows for a longer plant absorption for maximum plant uptake.
Established plants are yellowing and or wilting? Many times, yellow plants and plants that wilt when moisture levels are good are possibly because of a root rot. The most common fungus is Pythium. It is recommended to be proactive on the preventative and to drench every 4 weeks. If you've had this situation in the past I recommend doing it. There is a good list of chemicals to combat Pythium. Mast Young Plants is always a call away from assisting you with any concerns.
