THE BIG PICTURE

Binod Agarwal of SGR Group believes the duty-free import of black matpe “will definitely” extend beyond March 31 next year. The success of black matpe has spurred talk of growing pigeon peas this year . As of mid-December, Brazil doesn't have permission to export pigeon peas into India, but sources in the industry confirm discussions have been held around producing and exporting pigeon peas in the future. Pigeon peas are already grown as a cover crop in Brazil, so raising production levels shouldn't be complicated. A potential win-win situation sits on the horizon – India bolsters food security and Brazil profits from an easy to plant, easy to process pulse. But what if Brazil could also export its biggest and most important bean? What if it could build a whole new market?
