We would like to welcome you to the 2026 Slovek Ranch bull sale and say thank you to our customers! We love what we do and are here to serve your needs! This year’s sale brings a set of bulls that carry characteristics and genetics designed to be successful in every aspect of the industry and help bring both longevity and vitality to your operation. The ultimate goal is to do what we can to create the best cattle for our customers in order to keep your operation profitable. Our herd is culled hard in areas of fertility, feet, structure, udders, pleasant dispositions, and strong maternal abilities. Our biggest day Welcome
calving last spring was 42 calves in a day; as a family operation with only 2 of us here now, the cows have to be able to get their calves up, sucking, and thrive independently. Cows are bred to be easy keeping and efficient females whose progeny will go out and work for a living but still are able to pack on pounds using less feed. In correlation, our bulls are fed slower and not pushed hard, allowing them to grow at a more natural pace and persistently proves how much better they hold up. The two-year old bulls were out grazing from mid May to around Dec 10. Since then they have been in a 50 acre pasture and have to walk a ¼ mile between feed and water. The ET yearling bulls got started on feed around Oct 20. When we weighed them this winter and they were gaining too much so we opted to cut back feed rations; the bulls are capable of gaining at much higher rates but we feel strongly that gaining too much too fast will affect how they hold up over the long term. All of the older bulls have passed a fertility test and got breeding and pinkeye/footrot shot. The yearling bulls I’ll bring back home and fertility test in late April or early May after we get through the first cycle of calving. You will notice some lower ratio weaning bulls in this year’s sale. Those bulls are heifer bulls. I added birth ratios
in this year’s sale. For instance a bull with a 80 birth ratio is 20% below the average at birth. If he ended up at 90% weaning ratio he actually should be a plus 10%. We have been enrolled in the Maternal Plus program through the American Angus Association for a few years now and as of 2025 have achieved the Data Driven Herd Program Bronze status. It is made up of only 3 levels- 20 have reached Gold, 27 Silver, and only 81 other breeders in the United States have achieved Bronze status. An achievement showcasing years of dedication to collecting and submitting data to track progress of my herd over time. We do not have time to put up with nuisance cattle and don’t expect you to have to either. By being hard on our cattle, they should create offspring that are easier on you and contribute to the success of your operation! We stand behind our genetics and if you have any problems, please call and we will take care of you. You are welcome to come out and check out the bulls and cows at any point during the year, we love showing off our cattle!! See you at the sale! Bo & Aubrey Slovek

What is Promogen® Genetic Evaluation?
Promogen® Scoring 1. The system uses a numerical score of 1 to 6.5. 2. Animals with scores of less than 4 are not producing the three marker proteins we are measuring at physiologically effective levels. 3. Animals between 4-4.5 are producing the three marker proteins at levels that are physiologically average. 4. Animals scoring between 4.5 and 5.0 are in the top 15% of the tested populations. 5. Animals scoring between 5.0 and 5.5 are in the top 10%. 6. Animals scoring between 5.5 to 6.0 are in the top 5%. 7. Elite animals fall within the range of 6.0 to 6.5 and are the top 1% of the population. The Bottom Line ✓ Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertility and feed efficiency. ✓ Profits on overall wellness are realized through an increased response to vaccinces and antiparasitic treatments, drasti- cally reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use. ✓ Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates; reduced risk of early embryonic death; weaning calves at higher weights; overall retention and longevity in replacement females. ✓ Feed efficience is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammaton due to environmental stress factors and improve cellular energetics. ✓ Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immu- nologically inferior without requiring additional antibiotic costs and higher overall expenses. ✓ Immunologically superior animals that possess specific Promogen® predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable and see economic gains through these highly her- itable traits for generations to come.
Promogen™ genetic evaluation is another method for estab- lishing genomic probabilities. The purpose of the test is to identify and quantify, using a simple numerical scoring sys- tem, the presence of three key proteins that medical science has labeled collectively Defensins. A twenty-year research project involving several universities in the United States and Europe has proven that physiologic performance, whether it is measured as disease resistance, fertility, productivity, or athletic ability, are directly related to the concentration of these proteins in the body. Why is Promogen® Important? It provides a “road map” for developing management strate- gies that maximize herd profitability. It helps you identify animals who are most naturally inclined to herd longevity, reproductive efficiency, and naturally able to maximize environment and express Expected Progeny Dif- ferences (EPD’s) to the best of their ability. How does Promogen® equate to profitability? Genetic progress in beef cattle comes with challenges. The major issue is industry segmentation. Utilizing the Promo- gen® assay can add value throughout the production cycle. The ideal cow for a cow/calf operation is one that success- fully weans a feedlot-ready calf at six to seven months of age and does so with minimum added expense associated with feed supplementation, medication and labor. At the same time, that cow is expected to breed back within 40-90 days post-calving to repeat the cycle; she is expected to do this year after year. Promogen® assays will predict value-added cows that will raise healthy calves. Then there is the challenge of sire selection. Current EPD’s, even when supported by genomics testing, can become little more than a good guess with so many traits being selected simulta- neously. Promogen® testing accurately identifies bulls who are more feed efficient, more disease resistant, more fertile and ap- pear to be able to pass the ability to produce high levels of De- fensins and their associated proteins to their offspring.
I test around 50 animals from my herd and this is what Bill had to say about my herd... Actually, 20% scored 6.5 and 32% scored better than 6. This includes the 6.5s. In comparison, a herd shar- ing your environmental conditions had 15% score as 6.5s and 25% score 6 and above. A third herd with a 70 history of selection for performance located in the Midwest had only 3% score 6.5 and a total of 15% score above 6. The majority of seed stock herds that we have tested over the last 6 years that have not in- tegrated the Promogen score into their breeding and replacement strategies average 7% 6.5s and 18% that score above a 6. Your animals have been selected to survive. This is not case in most seed stock programs. – Bill Julian

The top selling bull in Koupals B&B sale in 2023 for $45,000. I found of group to partner on holy water after seeing him and his ten year old dam in production. The longevity in his cow family is very good. I’m excited to get daughters in production. A maternal brother just sold to Herbster Angus for $800,000. Another maternal brother sold for $70,000 this fall to Duff Cattle Company. A maternal sister also sold this fall for $85,000. There are multiple maternal brothers working across the country.

Flagstone is a full brother to the popular Badger bull but flagstone is way more proven with 317 daughters in production compared to badgers 1 daughter in production. He also has multiple maternal brothers working in North America. He is a son of the Y69 cow who is Baldridge’s top income cow in their history. I decided to flush a couple cows to him after talking to Tim Todd of Green Mountain Angus. He is an owner of the bull. The flagstone sons are very gentle bulls to be around. I’m excited about the full sisters to these bulls selling.

RE
Sire is a home raised bull from my embryo program.
I missed getting this bull entered in ASA and DNA sent in. He should be either out of Dark Knight or Holy Water. Should be 12.5% Sim- mental.
11
I pay close attention to herd health. Not as in giving more shots to prevent sickness. We give branding shots and pre weaning shots just like most commercial breeders. The bulls don’t receive any other shots until fertility testing. The two year olds got a virasheild 6VL% and pinkeye/footrot shot. The yearling bulls got Express 5VL5 and pinkeye/footrot. I get a lot of bull sale catalogs, as I’m sure you all do, and I can’t help but notice all the shots the seedstock industry gives; 2-4 shots at birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning, booster after weaning, then breeding shots. I don’t know any commercial breeder who gives that many shots. I think as seedstock breeders we need to challenge these cattle and run them like a commercial operation. I get that a lot of breeders calve early and have to go through a barn which creates challenges in and of itself with regards to sickness, but is the industry over vaccinating? I get that bulls are worth a lot of money but I also don’t believe every bull born out of a registered cow should make a bull. I think there are a lot of bulls that are sold that would get sick without strict vaccination protocols. …. and I definitely don’t want to pass those genetics on to my customers. If I have a cow that has a sick calf more than once she gets culled. I had one bull calf get foot rot this sum- mer. He probably could’ve made a bull but I culled him just because he got foot rot. Now that cow has a mark. If she has a calf that has a problem again she will get sold. If that problem is genetic, then I want to be sure I won’t pass that problem on to my customers. I doctored one bull in my April/May pen and now he will get culled and won’t be in next year’s sale because of it. There are some bulls that get sold for a lot of money and the new trend is to only auction off small amounts of semen that sells for a lot of money. Those straws are then used to flush to donor animals, sometimes to cows that are worth a lot of money and sometimes to yearling heifers who have outrageous numbers. What would his EPDs be if he was used on average cows? Another big trend is expensive bulls being out of embryo programs whose dam, grand dam, and sometimes even great grand dam have never even raised a calf. What is happening is people are taking a female that has really good EPDs and flushing them to yearling bulls that also have good EPDs and taking a daughter and flushing her around a year of age to another yearling bull with good EPDs. This is all from genomics not actual data. Then they take that offspring and flush it to another high genomic young animal and now they have a super star animal on paper with no actual data. They don’t even know if the great grand dam can get bred and raise a decent calf yet. Or the grandam or dam. But they are promoted hard and the commercial guy is the one who has to suffer with the results when they find out the DNA isn’t right. Genomics are for perfect world scenarios. It doesn’t account for running cattle on grass in a commercial setting. Would the genomics be right if they were fed like dairy animals? Maybe.. But not many commercial producers run their cattle that way. Genomics doesn’t count for adaptability. Thoughts from Slovek Ranch
As you look at the sires I use you won’t see a lot of popular sires. It’s for a reason. I put a lot of miles on looking at cattle. I’m always looking for genetics to bring into my herd and it’s hard to find ones I really like. If you ever want to talk to me on why I don’t use a sire or why I choose the ones I do, feel free to call me and I’ll give you my reasons why I don’t use them. In 2004, the average weaning weight on bulls across the AAA data base was 650 pounds. In 2024 it was 655 pounds. What does that mean? We’ve reached the growth point to where the environment won’t allow for more growth. For the most part the only way to achieve bigger weaning weights is by additional inputs. The growth potential is there but the resources aren’t. Have you ever bought bulls before with huge weaning weights and not seen an increase in your own weaning weights? It’s because your environment won’t allow it without those extra inputs. If you aren’t retaining ownership on your calves you aren’t getting the genetic potential of those offspring. The buyer of your calves will when they get them to the feedlot, which is great because you want whoever buys your calves to make money, but what’s going to happen with the daughters you keep back? More than likely they’ll be bigger harder-doing cows that won’t last as long. You might see where you are running less cows on the same amount of acres while adding higher open rates.
12
For lots, I just did a sort for sires and weaning weights. The sire with the most sons starts the lots. The highest adjusted weight is the first one in the group. I put all my first calf heifers in one group then the rest of the cows in another group. I enter in what the scale says to AAA and they send me back adjusted weights and ratios. Lot 1 is the highest adjusted weight bull of the Holy Waters but he isn’t the highest ratio because of the age of the dam. If you ever want to give me a call on why I choose some bulls over others, please feel free. I don’t want to throw any breeder under the bus. There is just certain reasons I wont use a lot of the hot sires. I try to keep my herd a no holes herd. Seems like with a lot of the hot bulls you end up breeding their daughters to fix their weaknesses. I don’t want my cattle to have weaknesses. Family operation. Just two of us here now. Aubrey helps as much as she can and we plan on working cattle around her schedule so she can help. Family Operated. Traditions Begin. Legacies Left.

Welcome Dear Cattle Producers, Welcome to the Slovek Ranch annual bull sale. As always the bulls are trich tested and fertility tested along with a breeding shot, pink eye, and foot rot shots. The bulls have a nice blend of calving ease, growth, carcass traits, and feed conversion and efficiency, along with some cross- bred vigor; more on that all on sale day. The 2 year old bulls were all used for short periods during this past breeding season. As always they have had 50 acres to get exercise while we were feeding them during the winter. Feel free to stop by and look before sale day. From Philip we are 10 miles north, 9 west, 1 north, and 3 west. Call (H)605-457-2311 or (C)605-685-3588. Hopefully we get started on time this year! See you soon, Bill & Pennie Slovek
