Hi there,
I wanted to send this to all trustees but could not get the email for all of them. For those that I was able to get the email for, I would greatly appreciate this being passed along to them.
I am a student on campus. I want to preface this email by saying that I am politically moderate and do not belong to any on- or off-campus political or non-political organization. I am just reaching out because I care about the campus community. With thousands of students about to arrive for Fall Quarter and with the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk, I think it is advantageous and morally grounded that the university reassure the entire student body and faculty that academic freedom and freedom of expression are hallmarks of American universities and are why universities have helped humanity thrive. I think everyone should be reassured that regardless of who someone is or what they stand for, political violence is unacceptable, especially at the very places that freedom and civil rights are most crucial. Again, I'm politically moderate. Whether it was Charlie Kirk or a progressive activist being assassinated is beside the point. Nobody, regardless of their political opinions, deserves to be assassinated when they were just trying to spread and debate values, ideas, and give all students a voice to express their opinions. I believe CWU ensuring and reinforcing their commitment to academic freedom, free expression, and common decency and respect for others will help calm tensions, especially with so many (likely passionate on both sides of the aisle) students about to arrive.
This is a ripe opportunity to establish unity regardless of people's differences.
