Utilizing the words of Abraham Lincoln himself as well as many other statesman was an ingenuous way of telling the story of probably the most important period in American history. The book was captivating and at the same time enlightening. It was like I was actually there with Lincoln when he was dealing with his commanders to try to win the war, to his fellow statesmen on issues as important as the eradication of slavery and winning the Presidential election, to the influence Mrs. Lincoln had on his life and his career. Lincoln’s fortitude and resolve came through again and again in his words and his actions. If you are a history buff or have an interest in what is happening today, this is a must read for you. Intriguing and captivating portrayal of American history —Dan Craddock
Not just history, but a story with suspense and personality culminating in the pivotal election of 1864. I know something of the Civil War but this constellation of facts, quotation and narrative--all focused on the election--is something I’ve not encountered before. Well done.
Powerful dramatic narrative —Bonnie K. Wachtel
