As a community bank, we believe in fostering community growth through volunteerism, sponsorship, and involvement. These community values shine bright in not only our Friends Club activities, but also in our members! Friends Club is made up of an amazing group of loyal customers who also foster growth in our community through supporting local organizations, engaging in historic preservation, providing mentorship to community youth, volunteering medical assistance, and so much more. That's why we created our Friends Club Member Spotlight! Each quarter, we will feature an employee-nominated Friends Club member who is fostering community growth through volunteerism and involvement. Hills Bank will donate $250 to a local non-profit on behalf of this member to show our support for the work they do in our community! This quarter we sat down with Ann Opatz from Lisbon .

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to live in southeastern Iowa. I’m originally from Waverly, so Eastern Iowa has always been home to me. I met my husband Ken after he returned from active duty in the Army in 1975. Today, we live in Lisbon, his hometown. Ken’s ancestors arrived in Lisbon in the 1850s, and our home has been in his family since his great- great-grandparents purchased the property in 1896. These generational roots connect us to our home and community. What organizations do you volunteer with? I have volunteered with a variety of organizations over the years, starting in my children’s classrooms at the local elementary school in the 1980s and then serving on the Lisbon School Board from 1995-2004, the last four years as President. I was a founding member of the Lisbon Community School District Foundation, a nonprofit established in 1986 to raise funds for scholarships for Lisbon students pursuing post-high school education. The Foundation has made an impact on the lives of so many Lisbon graduates over the years, having awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to Lisbon graduates. In the early 1980s, I served as a founding member of the Southeast Linn Community Center Board of Directors. That board, comprised of community members from Lisbon and Mount Vernon, did amazing work to raise the funds and oversee the construction of the community center building in 1986, which has benefitted people of all ages in Lisbon, Mount Vernon, and the surrounding communities. In the 1990’s, I served on the Lisbon Economic Development Commission, and also prepared income taxes for low income and elderly residents of Lisbon through the Volunteer
Thank you, Ann, for your commitment to the Lisbon community and for fostering growth here in Southeast Iowa. A $250 donation has been made to the Southeast Linn Community Center to show our support for the work you do in our community. Originally named the First National Bank of Lisbon, the bank saw several owners over the years and was purchased by Hills Bank in 1996. With the establishment of a bank on Main Street nearly 150 years ago came the opportunity for community growth and betterment. Hills Bank has established itself as a generous supporter of our community’s organizations and events. What’s your favorite part of Friends Club? A few years ago I had the opportunity to work with Friends Club when approached to collaborate on offering a guided walking tour of the Lisbon Main Street Historic District to Friends Club members. Friends Club did such a good job of promoting the event that twenty people ended up on a waitlist. It was a pleasure to work with Hills Bank staff on this special project to showcase our community’s history.
Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. Ken and I served as disaster response volunteers with the American Red Cross from 2013-2018. We were assigned as emergency response vehicle drivers, and put on many miles as we traveled to help families and communities affected by natural disasters. Working with the Red Cross was challenging but very rewarding. We met many people of all walks of life and learned how resilient people can be when faced with disaster and loss. How has volunteering enriched your life? My parents taught me and my siblings the importance of service to others and our community, something we all carried into our adult lives. I enjoy helping people, solving problems, and working to better my community. Through my work with various organizations, I have met people from all walks of life and learned something new from each experience. Who inspires you in your community? I draw inspiration from working with other volunteers to help people in my community and to plan for Lisbon’s future, and from observing the successes of others, especially those who serve in leadership roles. I am amazed by the number of young people who make time to actively engage in our community. How do you see Hills Bank in your community? Lisbon, with a population of about 2,200, is fortunate to have a full- service bank in our community. Hills Bank occupies a prominent spot on Union Block in the Lisbon Main Street Historic District, housed in a building that has served the community as a bank since 1875. (The original building was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1894.)

How did you get your start in banking? I had just graduated college, and was trying to figure out what to do. My future mother-in-law told me she thought I’d be good at banking, since I’m good at numbers and working with people. So I interviewed at the Hills Bank in North Liberty on Zeller street, and was offered a job right during the interview – I felt that was pretty cool! What’s your favorite part of your job? My favorite part is working with customers and helping them through life events. I’ve spent 22 years in Cedar Rapids with a specific client base. I’ve helped kids when they were little, and now they’re adults. I’ve helped individuals through the death of a loved one, with marriages… all sorts of things. Continuously getting to know the customer, and connecting with them, is my favorite part of the job. That’s what’s kept me here and kept me going.
What does it mean to come back to Williamsburg? I grew up in Williamsburg – and it is truly a fantastic and active community. People support local organizations and are involved in making the town a better place to live. That community – the way it comes together for everything – to me it’s unique. When you’re in a small town like Williamsburg, and you walk into the local grocery store, you know everybody. You know the cashiers, the kids carting your groceries out to your car, and the people in the aisles. There aren’t many places in Iowa anymore that you can go up to the public square and find all the parking spots are full, with people shopping and supporting local businesses. That sense of community is what Williamsburg is all about. Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m so excited that we’re entering this market to serve both the customers we already have in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas, and also getting to know new people and bringing the Hills Bank culture to town!

Iowa winters have us relying more on heating systems and fireplaces to keep warm – and setting up dazzling holiday decorations to warm our hearts. Unfortunately, these seasonal traditions can also raise the risk of house fires. Here are some key fire safety tips every homeowner should know before winter arrives. Winter Fire Safety Tips
20
Fire Safety: Talk and Tour event For more tips, check out our on page 14! 21 Holiday Decorations • Outlet Safety: Use only lights that have been tested for safety (look for a certification mark such as UL). Avoid overloading electrical outlets and use a power strip with a surge protector. Turn off holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed. • Extension Cords: Never run extension cords under rugs or furniture, as they can overheat and cause a fire. Avoid "daisy- chaining" multiple cords together. • Christmas Trees: If using a real tree, keep it well-watered to prevent it from drying out and becoming highly flammable. Place the tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, and heat vents. • Candles: Never leave candles unattended. Consider using battery-operated candles instead. If you do use real candles, keep them away from flammable objects and extinguish them before leaving the room.
Heat Your House Safely • Space Heaters: Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, including curtains, furniture, and bedding. Always turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to bed. • Furnaces: Ensure your furnace is inspected and serviced annually by a qualified professional. This can help prevent malfunctions that could lead to a fire. • Fireplaces and Wood Stoves: Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually to prevent creosote buildup, which can cause chimney fires. Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to keep embers from escaping. Smoke Alarms Ensure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially inside and outside sleeping areas. Test them frequently and replace batteries as needed. Consider installing interconnected smoke alarms so that when one alarm sounds, they all do. This provides an earlier warning in case of a fire.

Proactive Estate Planning by the Hills Bank Wealth Management Group
Durable Financial Powers of Attorney, Medical Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills (sometimes called “Advanced Directives”) help to address your needs during this time. In this article, we will outline these documents because they will allow you control over who will make the important decisions related to your healthcare and financial matters if you are no longer able.
When someone mentions “estate planning,” your initial thought might be of a Last Will & Testament or a trust agreement. Estate planning encompasses more than just a plan for what happens to your assets when you pass away. It also includes documents that control who manages your financial assets and medical decisions if you become incapacitated during your lifetime. More specifically,

Durable Financial Power of Attorney (POA) A Durable Financial Power of Attorney empowers another person to act and make financial decisions on your behalf. A Durable Financial Power of Attorney remains in effect during the Grantor’s incapacity. Iowa law allows you to customize your financial POA to give your agent as much power as might be appropriate for your situation, but can cover needs as broad as maintaining real property, paying your bills, filing your taxes, and even making changes to your beneficiary designations. No matter the scope of their power, your agent is required by law to act in good faith and in your best interest. That said, your agent should be not only good with money, but someone you can trust and who understands your wishes. Medical Power of Attorney (POA) A Medical Power of Attorney names another person or persons to make medical decisions on your behalf in the event you are unable to do so yourself. Similar to a financial POA, a medical POA can be customized to limit your agent’s power. It is important to note that both Durable Financial Powers of Attorney and Medical Powers of Attorney can be made effective immediately, or they can be made effective upon a physician’s statement stating that you are no longer able to make medical and financial decisions.
Living Will A Living Will is a legal document
directing that life-sustaining procedures be withheld or withdrawn. This document takes effect only if you are unable to make healthcare decisions, and the condition causing this state is incurable or irreversible and will result in death in a relatively short period of time or a state of permanent unconsciousness without any reasonable likelihood of recovery. The medical paperwork you are asked to fill out upon visiting your doctor will likely ask if you have a Living Will. If you do, you should provide a copy to not only your primary care physician, but any specialist you may visit as well. Although all the documents above exist to help you when you are incapacitated, all must be created when you are still able to make decisions for yourself. It is important then to not delay this part of your estate planning, as by the time a need arises, it is often too late. This is why it is critical to make sure that the individual named in your financial and/or medical POA has a copy of the applicable POA document because it may become necessary for them to use after a medical emergency. It is also important to note that any time you wish to make a change to your Medical POA, Financial POA, or Living Will, you can do so by creating a new version of the document. However, it is crucial to remember to provide anyone who may have a copy of your previous POA or living will with the updated version.
If you have further questions, we invite you to schedule a meeting with one of our experienced Trust and Wealth Management Officers by calling 1-800-899-8858 or by email at Trust@HillsBank.com. We look forward to serving you as your trusted advisor.
