50 Years of the Tommy John Procedure: Surgical Success or Surgical Steroids? Hills Bank North Liberty (590 W Forevergreen Rd)

In 1974, New York Yankees’ starting pitcher, Tommy John, suffered an acute rupture of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) of the elbow. Typically, this injury was career ending, but Tommy John underwent UCL Reconstruction and a year later returned for 12 more years. The "Tommy John Surgery" quickly became more commonplace with elite throwing players. Join Dr. Ernie Found, retired orthopedic surgeon and active Cardinals fan, as he discusses the role of UCL

Reconstruction in baseball leading to the near epidemic of pitchers getting the procedure. The rapid rise of 15-20 years old players receiving this procedure will be discussed. Dr. Found will discuss the ethical issues raised by the possible enhanced performance achieved by some players and the heavily debated implications of this potential "surgical steroid" has for the game of baseball.
