Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe PARENTAL PEACE OF MIND
As parents, there’s nothing more precious in our lives than our children. We’re constantly going out of our way to set them up for success. We enroll them in extracurricular activities, help them study for school, and try to teach them everything we can about the world around them. It’s through these lessons that we really need to stress the importance of safety. The world can be an incredibly dangerous place, and without the proper knowledge, your kids could find themselves in harm’s way. It’s not always easy to stay up to date on the most recent safety developments and information. Most parents have to trust their own instincts and intuition. We all made judgment errors that led to injuries and accidents growing up, and we learned from our mistakes. While this can help keep your kids safe from the same safety hazards you experienced, it doesn’t necessarily protect them from new situations you may have never experienced in your childhood. Since November is National Child Safety and Protection Month, I wanted to share a few safety tips that might not be at the top of your mind. Share these with your children to ensure they stay safe when out of sight. Bike Safety The excitement kids feel when receiving their first bike is unmatched. They immediately want to hop on and ride it around the neighborhood, but they need to learn the proper safety precautions first. When you get them a bike, make sure you also get them a properly fitted helmet. I’m a
big believer in bike helmets, which is why I started Helmet Heads of Florida, a nonprofit charity aimed at providing the kids of central Florida with bike helmets. Bike accidents that involve an individual without a helmet can be horrifying, so don’t let your kids go out for a ride without a helmet! In addition to wearing helmets, your kids should also check their bikes to ensure the tires are inflated and the brakes are functioning properly. They should always wear reflective clothing while riding, especially if it’s dark outside. Also encourage them to ride on the sidewalk whenever possible, as riding on the street without a designated bike lane can be dangerous. Animal Safety Children love animals and can be quick to approach an unfamiliar dog or cat, trying to pet or love it. While this is perfectly okay at home with your trained pets, you and your child should never approach an unfamiliar animal. Even if the animal is with its owner and the owner says it’s okay to pet them, you should still show caution. You don’t always know how the animal will react, and sometimes, something as simple as your scent could put them on guard. It’s okay to look, but it’s best to avoid touching unfamiliar animals, no matter the circumstances. Internet Safety The internet is starting to look more and more like the Wild West with every day that passes. We used to believe our children would be completely safe within the confines of our homes, but the internet has
complicated matters. There’s so much to discuss when it comes to internet safety for children because there are few genuine safe spaces for kids on the internet. Potentially, the most dangerous place online for minors is social media, yet 90% of teenagers use social media according to various studies. It’s okay if your child has a social media account, but you need to talk with them about safety. They should keep their profile private and not accept any message, follows, or friend requests from people they don’t know. They need to be careful not to post any personal information or explicit photos. As a parent, you need to actively monitor your children’s social media and internet activity to ensure they’re avoiding trouble. Our children are our pride and joy. Let’s give them the tools necessary to stay safe and find success throughout their lives. Teaching your children about various safety aspects will only benefit them! – Moe DeWitt

Sheeran vs. Townsend: The Verdict Is In Ed Sheeran Faces Accusations of Copying ‘Let’s Get It On’
Sometimes, a song can feel similar to another, but when is it so similar that a songwriter needs to be sued? Well, Ed Sheeran faced the legal heat from the family of Ed Townsend after they claimed Sheeran’s hit song “Thinking Out Loud” was far too similar to Marvin Gaye’s classic song “Let’s Get It On,” which was written and composed by Townsend. The lawsuit was filed in July 2017 and was only resolved in 2023. Sheeran wasn’t being sued for outright copying the R&B classic but for replicating the “heart” of the song and the “harmonic progressions” and “melodic and rhythmic elements.”
artist is merely another example of [white] artists exploiting the genius and the work of Black singers and songwriters.”
During the court hearings, Sheeran attended in person and even performed live mashups of countless hit songs bearing similar chord progressions and rhythms. The musician’s testimony stated, “If I had done what you’re accusing me of doing, I’d be quite an idiot to stand on a stage in front of 20,000 people and do that.”
On May 4, 2023, a jury found Sheeran not guilty of copying “Let’s Get It On,” and the songwriter was at last free from the lawsuit. Despite the longstanding legal dispute, Sheeran and the Townsend heirs resolved the issue amicably, as the trial had proved to the family that Sheeran did not intend to copy the hit classic. Ed Townsend’s daughter, Kathryn Townsend Griffin, later said, “I’m just glad it’s over,” and that the lawsuit was never
Of course, Sheeran denied these allegations and insisted that the song is based on common building blocks for all pop music, which are in no way legally protected. While Sheeran asserted this was merely a similarity many pop songs share, Townsend’s attorney and civil rights figure Ben Crump declared, “For far too long, Black artists have created, inspired, and spread music all around the world, and Ed Townsend’s family believes Mr. Sheeran’s infringement of a Black

Tips to Make the Best Thanksgiving Turkey

Mayo Magic: The Secret to Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey
Flavor Infusion If you’re a mayo lover, you’ll agree it’s delicious! While it gives the turkey a subtle and rich flavor, the result doesn’t taste like mayonnaise at all! (Mayo haters can breathe a sigh of relief.) Even Browning Applying mayonnaise to the turkey creates an even and beautiful browning effect on the skin. This enhances the visual appeal and contributes a succulent and slightly crispy texture. Spice Kick Don’t worry — you’re not using only mayonnaise on your turkey. The mayo method serves as an excellent base for your choice of seasonings. You can create your own mixture before applying it to the turkey. Thyme, parsley, garlic powder, sage, cayenne, and rosemary are all great options.
Simple Preparation The mayo method streamlines your preparation process — here’s what to do:
The turkey undoubtedly takes center stage among the many culinary delights that grace the Thanksgiving table. While there are plenty of methods for cooking a turkey, many chefs and home cooks swear by the “mayo method” as the best way to achieve a moist and flavorful Thanksgiving turkey — here’s why! Moisture Lock One of the biggest challenges when roasting a turkey is maintaining its moisture. The mayo method involves slathering the turkey with a layer of mayonnaise before roasting. Because mayonnaise contains oil, it helps lock in moisture during cooking, resulting in a juicy and tender turkey.
•
Allow your turkey to thaw. Create your custom mayonnaise by mixing it with your seasonings of choice. Dry the turkey with paper towels and season it with salt and pepper. Gently separate the skin from the bird and slide in cubes of butter. Rub the entire turkey with your mayonnaise mixture, inside and out. Bake at 450 F for 30 minutes. Then lower the temperature to 325 F and cook for 15 minutes per pound.

This Thanksgiving, give the mayo method a whirl — you and your guests won’t be disappointed!
