JULY 2024

Fireworks, Family, and Freedom Reminiscing on Fourth of July Festivities

I still remember the taste of delicious homemade peach ice cream — my fondest summer memory. July is here, which means the Fourth of July is also upon us, a time of family fun and joy. As I reflect on my favorite childhood memories, I remember the best family gatherings in my uncle’s beautiful backyard, complete with a pool that provided the perfect setting for our celebrations. Those hot Texas summers were enjoyable because of the refreshing swims we always took to beat the heat. The Fourth of July, also recognized as Independence Day, is a popular holiday that most people think is about fireworks, good food, and family time, which, of course, it is, but we must

activity. Adding rock salt to the ice cream maker, ensuring the ingredients were perfectly mixed, and eagerly anticipating the final product were all part of this fantastic experience. Making the ice cream together strengthened our bonds and created long-lasting memories that we all cherish. Of course, any Fourth of July celebration would only be truly complete with fireworks. As the sky finally darkened after the long reign of the sun, we would all gather around to watch the colorful show light up the night. I always felt the fireworks were the icing on the cake of an already perfect day; watching them with my cousins and the rest of the family was a magical experience. These family gatherings were more than just celebrations; they were opportunities for family members of all ages to come together. The combination of great food, fun activities, and the company of loved ones made the Fourth of July an extraordinary occasion. Looking back on those days, I am grateful and nostalgic for the beautiful memories we created. The traditions we kept and the fun we had continues to inspire me to hold onto our loved ones and savor every moment we have. The Fourth of July remains a symbol of family unity and joy,

remember the true meaning. It is a celebration to honor the spirit of liberty and unity that defines America and its values. This day is a reminder of the sacrifices and freedoms cherished by generations past and present. I count my blessings daily, knowing how lucky we are to live in this country with endless possibilities and opportunities to better ourselves. Living in America means creating your path by setting and achieving your goals.

Back to that homemade peach ice cream — it was the special sweet treat everyone looked forward to. The fresh and juicy local peaches made this summer treat incredibly delicious. This dessert was a family tradition, and everyone prepared it using a hand-crank ice cream maker. Since one person could not handle the cranking alone, we all took turns, making it a fun and collaborative

a reminder of the happy times spent and the love that keeps us all together. I wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July! – Gary L. Medlin, Esq.

In Texas, several laws are often criticized as being unfair, particularly those related to drug offenses and age-related legal restrictions. Many people argue that criminalizing the use of controlled substances, especially in cases where no other crime is committed, is unjust. The argument is that if an individual is not dealing drugs or causing harm to others, the law should not penalize them for their personal choices. Another significant point of debate involves the legal age restrictions for various activities. Historically, the legal drinking age was 18, aligning with other adult responsibilities and rights such as voting and military service. The inconsistency of these laws arises when an 18-year-old can vote and serve in the military, potentially risking their life for their country, but cannot legally consume alcohol. This confusion and disparity are seen by many as unfair, questioning the logic of a person mature enough for significant responsibilities but not for consuming alcohol. These age-related legal restrictions also extend to other areas, where specific actions are criminalized for those under 21 but permissible for older people. Texas faces criticism for laws, particularly those concerning drug offenses and age-related legal inconsistencies. The criminalization of drug use without associated crimes and the varying legal ages for different adult responsibilities highlight perceived injustices, sparking an ongoing debate on fairness and rationality in the state’s legal system.

Fairness

Texas, known for its rich history and distinct cultural identity, also possesses a legal framework that often ignites significant debate and controversy. The state’s laws include regulations many residents deem unnecessary. These laws raise fundamental questions about justice, fairness, and balancing individual freedoms and societal norms, reflecting broader national conversations about the role and reach of state legislation. Let’s dive into how these laws are often considered irrational. CONTROVERSIAL TEXAS STATE LAWS

4. 2 Essential Tips for Grilling Perfection

Tips to Perfect Your Grill Game SUMMER SIZZLE

Summer is the season for grilling. From skewered vegetables to sirloin steaks, your grill is perfect for making flavorful, nutritious food. Whether you plan to stoke the coals at a neighborhood get-together or prepare an incredible meal for a special occasion, you can use these two tips to get the most from your grill. Onions Have Layers The more you use your grill, the more grease, fat, and food debris accumulate on the grates. Luckily, onions are a natural solution to whisk away the mess. While caramelized onions are the perfect topping for burgers and steaks, you can use onions to clean your grill before grilling. First, ensure your grill is running hot; that heat will help enhance the onion’s cleansing properties. Then, using a skewer or grill fork as a handle, push

the onion along the grill’s grates. The onion’s natural acidity will help break down built-up fat, grease, and food. Once your grill is clear, it is ready for use! Clean grates do wonders for the taste and quality of the meats and veggies you grill. Heat and Temperature If you’ve ever had to take a food safety course, you know every meat has an ideal cooking temperature. For instance, chicken should reach 165 degrees internally, and for pork, it’s 145 degrees. While grilling, use a meat thermometer to determine which proteins are ready to serve and which need more time. Once you pull your meat off the grill, let it rest for at least five minutes before serving. This time makes the meat more tender and allows it to finish cooking off the grill passively.
