INTRODUCTION
Scottish artist Stuart Buchanan was born in Glasgow in 1970. He studied Fine Art Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 1992. Since then Stuart has established himself as a leading name within contemporary Scottish painting. He lives in the coastal village of Catterline, and works in Joan Eardley’s former studio. Stuart draws inspiration from his own childhood memories and experiences, as well as more current day to day life and the environment and landscape that surrounds him. His paintings speak of serenity and solitude, with figures and boats set in richly textured, colourful landscapes. Stuart’s paintings often depict single figures and couples, all sharing an enviable meditative state. They are often involved in an activity beyond the canvas and the viewer; gazing out to sea or at the stars, deep in that most important and almost lost art of day-dreaming. Stuart paints on boards, hessian, old potato sacks, using vibrant and luscious oils to highlight the various textures of weave, wood and brush-stroke. Brightly coloured backgrounds create spacious and quiet backdrops for the single rowing boat, a row of small horses, an elephant even. Forests feature too, tall trees reaching to the sky, tiny figures standing in the clearing; the sound of silence in a noisy world.
