Welcome

The calendar has been significantly refreshed and is now open for bookings – please do take the time to take a look as it provides a wide range of options, which we hope will support you in both doing your role and further growing your knowledge and skills. We will also continue to add learning opportunities to the calendar and will refresh it in January 2024. If you feel you would benefit by chatting to one of our People Development Partners for support with your development plan, please get in touch by email to pdod@ulster.ac.uk. The People Development Partner for your area will then get in touch to offer you support.

“The Effective Communication course was very informative and highlighted the importance of giving ourselves the time, the gift of time for our own personal development. Learning that there is a listening gap and taking notice of non- verbal cues. Also- keeping a Learning Journal to capture moments of things learned.”

– Kara Love Jefferson (Dept of Global Business and Enterprise.)

‘Induction’ at Ulster University

Self-led Journey: This Self-led learning journey has been developed to allow colleagues to work through the content at their own pace and they can revisit it as often as they need to. There are lots of useful content on the site, including a summary of the Rewards and Benefits, which may be useful for all colleagues to review. New Colleague Welcome Event, which will be hosted by the Vice Chancellor and members of the Senior Leadership Team: At this event, new colleagues will hear about the Ulster University strategy and values. This event will provide an opportunity to connect with other new colleagues, representatives of our various employee networks and Trade Union colleagues. The event will be run three times a year, on a rotational basis at each of our campuses. New colleagues will be automatically enrolled for the next available event. Please note, it is expected new colleagues will attend the event closest to when they have joined the University, irrespective of their campus base. Local Induction: Core to a great induction experience is a Local Induction which supports the new colleague to settle into their team and understand the requirements of their role. We have created a toolkit and resources for Line Managers to support in delivering Local Induction.

It is crucial that new colleagues joining the University are made to feel welcomed, valued and content that they have made the right decision to join our team. To help new colleagues settle into their new role, we have a comprehensive Induction programme in place.

Development Appraisal Review

Within our People Place and Partnership strategy we have committed that together we will create the conditions, frameworks and approaches to enable people to achieve, flourish and exceed both their own career aspirations and the University’s ambitions. Development Appraisal Review (DAR) is a holistic, on-going process, to develop, support and motivate all staff to be the best they can be and to gain all the relevant skills necessary to fulfil all aspects of their role and development within UU. Having an appraisal is an opportunity to pause and reflect. It is dedicated time for you to sit down and talk about you and your role, and to plan ahead for your future development with the support, feedback and guidance of your appraiser. A range of online resources have been developed to support colleagues in understanding and completing the DAR process. There are two ways of recording the appraisal; online or paper- based. Online is the recommended approach for our non- academic colleagues. The resources included in the graphics include a new eLearning module and resources to support either the paper or online version of DAR.
