Hiring Preference in State Government
The Commonwealth also extends this hiring preference to active members of the Virginia National Guard, as well as to the surviving spouse and dependents of service members killed in action. Furthermore, veterans who are disabled, who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during specified time periods, or who participated in military campaigns are entitled to preference over others in hiring for nearly all federal government jobs.
The Commonwealth of Virginia and its localities give preference to honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces in its employment hiring policies and practices, provided the veteran meets all knowledge, skills, and eligibility requirements for the position. Additional consideration is also given to veterans who have a service-connected disability rating fixed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
