The manager of the Central telephone exchange of Virginia, Illinois, said one day to the Rev. Mr. Burchit, a pastor of the city : “Come up this evening and bring your harp and I will give you a great audi ence." “That night when the wires were not busy the manager connected our city with all the principal cities of the state. I stepped into the closet near the receiver of the long-distance phone and began to play and sing. When I had ceased I h^ard the clapping of hands from Chi cago, Springfield, Bloomington, ! Peoria, and many other places, and to this day I do not know how many cities listened to the Christian song I sang that night If we sing or speak in a telephone exchange, or in some less public place, we shall never know how many hear us and are helped, or how many hear us and are hindered. It becomes us to be careful when we use our tongues for speech or song.” A discouraged young doctor in one of our large cities, Was visited by his fa ther, who came up from a rural district. “Well, son,” he said, “how are you get ting along?” “I’m not getting along at all,” was the answer. The old man’s countenance fell, but he spoke of courage and patience and hope. Later in the day he went with his son to the free dispen sary. He sat in silence, while twenty-five poor unfortunates received help. When the door had closed upon the last one, the old man burst out, “I thought you told me you were doing nothing. Why, if I had helped twenty-five people in a month, I would thank God that my life counted for something.” “There isn’t any money in it, though,” explained the son. “Money!” the old man shouted. “What is money in comparison with being of use to your fellow men V'—Rev. J. J. Wright When a missionary in South Dakota had helped a boy mend his net, the lad said eagerly : “Where did you learn to do that work so fast? And every mesh so straight!” “On the Maine coast. My fa ther was a fisherman.” “There must be lots of fun back there—fish so thick; I’ve read about the swordfish.” “But the sharks tear our mackerel nets badly.” “But' that gave you more work to do.” “Right. The first money I ever put in the bank was earned by mending nets.” “What made you leave all those things and come out here where we don’t have anything but small fish?” “Because a man came along when I was mending a her ring net for my father one day, and told how much churches were needed in the West.” “You’re not the preacher over at Creston, that Jim Rogers told me so much about? I’ve been meaning to go and hear you. I’ll be there next Sunday,—and more kids, too.- Say, I didn’t know men went with Him now, just as Andrew and Peter did. That makes the Bible seem like a new book.”— Rev. Chas. N. Sinnett. A little girl in a Chinese village where a China Inland missionary lived, watched this man as he went about his Master’s work. She saw him going to the homes where there were sickness, death, and sor row; and she watched him as he moved about that village. She never heard him speak in public. One day she went to another village, and followed some girls into a mission school. There she heard a lady talking to them, in Chinese, about some One full of gentleness and sympathy and kindness, some One to whom little

Feb. 9—By sacrifice. Matt. 16:24. “What Then?” “He is counting on you”— He has need of your life In the thick of the strife; For that weak one may fall If you fail at His call. He is counting on you. If you fail Him—what then? “He is counting on you”---- On your silver and gold, On the treasure you hold; On that treasure still kept, Though the doubt o’er you swept, “Is this gold not all mine?” (Lord, I knew it was thine.) He is counting on you. If you fail Him—what then? “He is counting on you”— On a love that will share In His burden of prayer For the souls He has bought With His life-blood, and sought Through His sorrow and pain To win “Home” yet again. He is counting on you. If you fail Him—what then? “He is counting on you”— On life, money and prayer; And “the day shall declare” If you let Him have all In response to His call; Or if He in that day, To your sorrow, must say: “I had counted on you, But you failed Me”—what then? “He is counting on you.” Ohl the wonder and grace To look Christ in the face And not be ashamed, For you gave what He claimed And you laid down your all For His sake—at His call. He had counted on you, And you failed not—what then ? —Bessie Porter Head.
