“It often requires,” said Dr. A. J. Gor don, “more courage to preach to one than to a thousand. It is the most concen trated form of preaching. Many strong preachers have to confess that here is the point where they are the most weak; that they lack the courage to face a sinner squarely and talk to him of his responsi bility.” Emerson said: “You are you and I am I ; souls are not saved in bundles.” Some time ago a Japanese youth came to England to learn engineering. He re sided in vLondpn for a while, and true to his national character, spent his spare time in studying many subjects, but es pecially the Christian religion. He watched the lives of those who were called Christians and failed to see the beauty of the Lord upon them. He went to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the City Temple, and elsewhere to learn the truth, but he came away from them without under standing the way of salvation. After a time he visited Cornwall to study mining engineering, and lodged in the home of a saintly old couple. He found that they differed from all others he had met and, little by little, as he saw Jesus Christ living His beautiful life in them, his heart was opened to the Truth, and through these humble saints he came to know the Saviour. Lord Jesus, write it deepjy on my heart When most I feel how precious ■ In Thy Shepherd-love Thou art, When most I prize the shelter and Comfort of the fold, Let me think of those that wander Weary, out on wild and wold;
Let me think of them as Thou dost, Who hast died for them and me, ’Till I feel how great Thy love of them, How great their lack of Thee.” — Rev. Wright Hay. A few months ago a stranger, always earnest in “One by One”, work, found himself sitting next a young man at breakfast in a boarding-house connected with the Y. M. C. A. It was a merry time, and conversation, generally, was car ried on with jests and stories amid peals of laughter, but this witness began to talk with his neighbor with the set purpose of winning him for his Saviour. At first he spoke on the lower plane of the com monplace things of life—of home and the loved ones there, and of their church as sociations; then he tenderly inquired, “Is Jesus Christ your Saviour?” “No!” quite frankly replied the young man. “Why?” was the next question. “I don’t know.” Then solemnly the witness said: “He that believeth not is condemned already, be cause he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:' 18), and before they left the table the young fellow received salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. For a week they had fel lowship together, and then the traveler passed on to another place. In a few days he wrote to his young friend and to his surprise received no answer until a letter came from the Y. M. C. A. Secretary, say ing: “Do you remember that dear boy G----------- at the club who gave himself unreservedly to God under your ministra tion ? The Lord took him to Himself very suddenly in that awful railway accident just before Christmas. The boy was on
his way home to spend his holiday with his parents. He was instantly killed 1 How we do praise God that you led him into the light. How very uncertain life is here.” In that accident sixty-eight lost their lives, and the father, writing shortly after, said: “Words fail to tell you of the comfort it brought to our home when we heard that through your efforts our dear boy was brought to Christ.” Only a con versation at a breakfast table, but its re sults—the salvation of a soul, intense comfort to a bereaved family, and eternal joy to the Lord. Five thousand people winning three souls in each case would produce:— In1 year.............. 20,000 Christians. In 2 years.......... 80,000 Christians. In 3 years.......... 320,000 Christians. In 4 years..!........ 1,280,000 Christians. In 5 years...,.,.... 5,120,000 Christians. In 6 years..... 20,480,000 Christians. In 7 years.......... 81,920,000 Christians. In8 years.............. 327,680,000 Christians. In 9 years.......... 1,310,720,000 Christians. This is only a supposition, but you see thus, in less than ten years, all the world would be evangelized. Not long ago an engine stoker was con verted, when the following conversation followed: “You ought to join the ‘One by One’ Working Band,” said a worker; “that is just the thing for you.” “Never heard of if. What do they do?” “They win others.” “How ?” “Why, they first ask God for the names of those for whom He wants them to
