Jesus the Celestial Miracle Unfolding as a flower, from the germ of a perfect youth; growing up to enter into great scenes and have his part in great trials; Jesus is harmonious in all with Himself and truth, a miracle of celestial beauty. He is a lamb in innocence, a God in dignity; revealing a faultless piety, such as no mortal ever attempted, such as, to the highest of mortals, is inherently impossible. He advances the most extravagant pretensions, without any show of conceit, or even seeming fault of modesty. He suffers without affectation of 'composure and without restfdint of pride; suffers as no morthl sensibility can, and where, to mortal view, there was no reason for pain at all; giv ing us not only an example of gentleness and patience in all the small trials of life, but revealing the depths even of the passive virtues of God, in his agony and the patience of his suffering love .—Horace Bushnell. The Hidden Ones Molinos, in one of his letters, expresses the route through which the hidden ones pass: “There are many souls dedicated to God, who receive from His hand great thoughts, visions, and mental elevations, and yet for all that, the Lord keeps from them the grace of working mir acles, understanding hidden secrets, foretelling future contingencies, as He communicates these things to other souls who have constantly gone through tribulation, temp tations, and the true Cross, in the state of perfect humil ity, obedience, and subjection.” Observe that the deepest and most fruitful life in God comes through “the true Cross” and a life of perfect and perpetual subjection to the will of God in the manifold sufferings incident to the members of the Body of Christ. The highest perfection is not reached by means of sensible delights, consolations, and visions, but through crucifixion, as Christ taught by precept and example. The soul that would be united to Christ and have His life in all its fulness, must be con formable to Him, and follow Him through all the path way of suffering. Not many are willing to submit to such painful experiences; “many are called, but few are chosen,” because few will embrace the Cross with a glad and full surrender of their own will, and follow on with patience and perseverance to the end. Did You Ever Try This? A minister told recently of three Christian men who made a vow together that they would pray regularly about how much they ought to give. The men did so, and they testified to the fact that within six months their gifts to the Church of Christ increased by more than 100 per cent! That handsome advance was the product of prayer, yield ing compound interest in- blessing on the givers, and to the Church and the cause of the kingdom of- God. Realization of Hell One has said: “Not to realize hell is not to prize the cross.” Those who realize the hell of their sin’s deserving are quick to recognize the sufficiency and suitability of the Saviour’s substitution.
