W e live in a world which is in turmoil. We live in an age, not only of world problems, but problems which have invaded the Christian church as well. It is a day in which a clear witness needs to be given to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Rarely in the world’s history has the need for this witness been so marked. In the light of this fact, we are go ing to study together the 6th chapter of Isaiah which gives us the background of a call to witness, and it must be a firsthand witness. When I was a young officer in the British Army, I was in training to try men who were brought before us on some petty charge. We were told never to accept secondhand evidence — namely, evidence which is couched in such terms as this, “I was told that so and so did this.” The evi dence must be direct as “I saw this man doing this thing.” Now the world has a right to expect that those who witness for the Lord Jesus Christ know exactly what they are talking about. No word of witness can be effective unless it is truly first hand. This was so in the case of the prophet Isaiah and it is so with you and me. Having cleared this point let us read the first 4 verses of Isaiah 6: “In the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.” This was something the prophet could not bring to pass by his own pow ers. God came' into his life and mani fested Himself to him — and in ex actly the same way comes to us an understanding of salvation and of the wonders of God’s grace. Grace is God- given to us and is not created by man’s own mind or attitude. (continued on next pageJ
