Despite the Challenges of 2020
Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a time to honor the U.S. veterans who have fought for our country and survived. These individuals risked their lives to fight, and it’s that bravery and unwavering devotion that we recognize by observing this holiday. This year, Veterans Day takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, annual traditions to celebrate Veterans Day will be different. Many states, towns, counties, and cities have announced that the traditional Veterans Day parades will be canceled. This is a huge blow. The parades are one of the best ways to not only honor veterans but also mingle with other people all intent on showing just how much the community appreciates their efforts. Additionally, family members and friends might not be able to visit loved ones who are veterans due to the restrictions of care facilities. However, despite the changes and difficulties, there are still plenty of ways we can support our veterans this year.

Fly the Flag
Even at home, we can show our support by flying the American flag. Our flag is a great way to show patriotism and lets all veterans know that they are in our thoughts. When flying your flag, be sure to follow the proper rules for displaying the flag, which you can find at Military.com.
Donate

A great way to support veterans is to donate to charities specifically for them. Military.com lists several organizations you can donate to, including Disabled American Veterans, Wounded Warrior Project, and Homes for Our Troops. You can also donate to support military working dogs that fight on the front lines with our soldiers through Petco or Natural Balance.

Write a Letter
While you might not be able to meet veterans face to face, you can always write them a letter or send them a postcard. Since text messaging and instant messaging have become popular forms of communication, taking the time to sit down and write a letter gives the act a lot of meaning. Veterans are sure to appreciate having their service recognized in a handwritten letter.
