This is my last President’s Message. The year has gone fast and I’ve enjoyed serving the Club as President over the past year. I look forward to watching all the great things that future Boards will accomplish going forward. With that said, I would like to introduce Mr. Jim Varner as the next President of the Club. Jim probably needs no introduction for many of you, as he is a Charter member and a past President from 2012. Jim was instrumental in helping orchestrate the transition during the trans- fer from Castle and Cooke to the membership, and if Seven Oaks had a Hall of Fame, Jim would be a first ballot inductee. He will take the Club to new heights. All that and he is also an ardent Dodgers fan! I’d like to acknowledge the rest of the Board for their work over the past several years. Two of them are finishing their terms later this month: I’d like to thank Governors David Mettler and Claire Gilliam for all their work over the last three years. As we look forward, the Club has many plans for the future and a financial strategy to execute on those plans. The Mixed Grilled Expansion bidding process ends on February 19th, with all bids due to our architect at the close of business on that Monday. After our Architect receives the bids, the Club’s Construction Oversite Committee (“COC”) will review them and decide which bid it feels is best for the Club. Representing the Club on the COC is member Tom Hartnett, member Steve Hendrix, Governor Mike Pelle, President-elect Jim Varner, and myself. The COC will then make a From the President by Paul Miller, President, Board of Governors
recommendation to the Board of Governors. The last item before beginning construction will be approval from the City Building Department, which is currently underway. Below is a list of questions and answers regarding the Mixed Grille expansion project: Q1: When will the Grille expansion construction begin? A: The Grille expansion plans are currently under review by the City Building Department. The Club does not know how long it will take for the City to review the architecture plans and approve them. Q2: How much will the Grille Expansion cost? A: The project is currently out to bid with three local commercial contractors. The bids are due on Monday, February 19th. We will have to wait and see what the amounts of the respective bids before we know the cost of construction. Q3: What will the new Grille provide to the membership in its full scope as compared to the current Grille? A: Increased seating capacity, noise reduction, increased kitchen capacity, enlarged bar area with views out toward the golf course, a larger outdoor area, a pergola away from the outdoor common area, a dish washing area and service station (“scullery”), additional seating area on west side of the expanded grille, a separate and distinct menu (including pizza!). Q4: How will the Club pay for the expansion besides the use of the Grille assessment approved by the voters last year?

(President's Message continued)
A: The Governors will work with the Club’s CFO to determine the best mix of funding sources to pay for the Grille expansion. Sources in addition to the member assessment include the capital reserve fund, debt, initia- tion fees, and free cash flow from operations. The Club will balance the Grille expenditures with other projects for 2024. The Club is in an excellent financial position with over two million dollars of cash in retained earnings. Q5: How long will the $20.00 dollar a month assessment for the Grille be assessed? A: The assessment will continue until the Grille is paid off. It is estimated at this time that the Grille will be paid off in around three years after the start of construction. Q6: Will there be further increases in assessments to pay for the Grille? A: There are no further assessments specific to the Grille planned.
Q7: Why has there not been a slide show or pictures of the project distributed to the membership? A: The elements of the project’s composition could change, based on the bids and/or comments from the City Building Department. The Board is waiting until the full details of the project are ascertained via the bidding process. After that, and approval of the project by the Board of Governors, pictures of the project will be released to the membership. I thank everyone for their patience, as I know there are a lot of questions and excitement surrounding this project. I leave the President’s office very optimistic regarding our great Club’s future. I look forward to watching as other volunteer members take their positions on the Board and accomplish great things.
I hope to see you around the Club.

Our selection for February...
The final novel from a great American storyteller.
Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig’s beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an eleven-year-old’s imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for “female trouble” in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin. There Donal is in for a rude surprise: Aunt Kate - bossy, opinionated, argumentative, and tyrannical - is nothing like her sister. She henpecks her good-natured husband, Herman the German, and Donal can’t seem to get on her good side either. After one contretemps too many,
The Seven Oaks Book Club meets each month to discuss books on a reading list which is created by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are invited to attend. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 28th at 11:30am. Please email Cynthia Bailey at cbailey664@gmail.com
Kate packs him back to the authorities in Montana on the next Greyhound. But as it turns out, Donal isn’t traveling solo: Herman the German has decided to fly the coop with him. In the immortal American tradition, the pair light out for the territory together, meeting a classic Doigian ensemble of characters and having rollicking misadventures along the way. Charming, wise, and slyly funny, Last Bus to Wisdom is a last sweet gift from a writer whose books have bestowed untold pleasure on countless readers.
