Beyond hockey, Maddy loved colouring, building with LEGO, and spending time at the family cottage. She adored her Mémère’s lasagna. Loyal to her close circle of friends, she was known for her unwavering support, quick wit, and talent for lightening the mood. She loved a good debate and was always ready to stand her ground with sharp reasoning. A celebration of Maddy’s life was held Saturday, March 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the upstairs hall of the Vankleek Hill Arena. “We had teams driving an hour and a half, two hours, just to pay their respects to Maddy,” said Lecuyer. “It just tells you how much she meant to people.” Lecuyer is working with the family to launch the Maddy Duval Defender of the Crease Foundation. The foundation will carry forward her legacy by supporting initiatives that help more girls access and participate in female hockey, while fostering the same spirit, team- work and joy that Maddy embodied. “I’m honoured to take this on, and honoured that her family has trusted me with this initiative,” said Lecuyer, adding that while the foundation is still in its early stages, a board of directors has been established, and further announcements are expected soon. “We wanted to find a way to honour her legacy, her passion for hockey, and the

It’s not just those who knew her best who are mourning — the entire hockey community is grieving the death of a bright young star. Madelyn “Maddy” Duval was just 16 years old when she lost her life on March 13, succumbing to injuries sustained in a reported car crash. She was one of three people who tragically died in the collision. Maddy was a promising young goaltender with the Clarence-Rockland Girls Hockey Association’s U18 team. She spent nine seasons with the Glengarry Highlanders, her home association. “The outpouring from not just the hockey community, but from people all over, has been overwhelming,” said Stephanie Lecuyer, a close friend of Maddy’s mother, Heather, and whose daughter was Maddy’s best friend. “You can tell Maddy really touched so many people and made an impact wherever she went, always in such a positive light. She was so young and had her whole life ahead of her. We really did lose a shining light.” Maddy leaves behind her loving parents, Kim Howes and Sylvain Duval, as well as her sisters, Katty, Emmy, Émilie and Geneviève. She was the granddaughter of Monique and Lyman Howes.
