When you turn to a nursing home facility to care for a loved one, you expect the staff to treat them with kindness and respect and to have their best interests at heart. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Far too many nursing home residents are victims of abuse at the hands of the very people meant to care for them. Recognizing the Signs of Elder Abuse According to the World Health Organization, around 1 in 6 (approximately 15%) of adults 60 years and older experience some form of abuse in institutional settings each year. Elder abuse takes on many forms, including physical and emotional abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Some signs of abuse can be easy to recognize, but not all of them are. Bruises, pressure marks, abrasions, and signs of restraint can indicate physical abuse. Those who have been neglected may suffer from bedsores, poor hygiene, dehydration, or malnutrition. Often, victims also show more subtle behavioral symptoms, such as social withdrawal, anxiety and depression, and/or fearfulness around caregivers. What to Do if You Suspect Nursing Home Abuse It can be easy to attribute some signs of abuse to natural aging, but you should not ignore repeated and ongoing problems. Often, abuse is hidden, and elderly victims are afraid or unable to speak up for themselves. Trusting your instincts and taking quick action can protect your loved one and hold negligent parties accountable. The first step is to talk with your loved one and document what you see and hear with a record of dates, times, and specific issues. You should also speak with the facility supervisor about your concerns and have your loved one transferred to a hospital to treat their injuries. Report any suspected abuse to adult protective services and local enforcement. Finally, consult with an attorney experienced in nursing home negligence and abuse. An attorney will help remove your loved one from the situation, file claims against facilities and caregivers, and seek compensation for injuries.
