MONEY MATTERS Financial Literacy Is Essential for a Secure Future
April is Financial Literacy Month, and if we’ve learned one thing, it’s that few people ever receive a real education in financial literacy. Unfortunately, money issues are at the heart of most marital disputes, and they can create long-term financial stress if not handled properly. Things like credit card debt and poor cash flow management can become significant problems if not addressed early in life — or in a relationship. The earlier you develop a good relationship with money and strong financial discipline, the better off you’ll be in the long run. One of the best examples of financial discipline I’ve seen comes from my clients who served in the military. Many of them used a service called First Command (formerly USPA & IRA), which taught service members a simple but powerful habit: Pay yourself first. This meant automatically setting aside a portion of every paycheck into an investment account before spending a dime. Over the years, as these individuals earned more, they continued to increase their savings. And let me tell you — every single person I’ve met who followed this system has been in great financial shape for retirement. Even more incredible is that they often passed this discipline down to their kids, who learned from a young age to save a portion of their allowance. Now, here’s where it gets interesting: Many of these clients, even after retiring, still want to keep saving. It’s so ingrained that I’ve had to remind them, “You’re on the other side of the equation now. It’s okay to take money out to live on!” So, if you have questions about how money works, take some time this month to educate yourself. Read a book, do some online research, or reach out to your financial advisor
— we’re always happy to explain concepts and help you make informed decisions. Additionally, we offer monthly workshops on financial planning, including a full retirement course consisting of two three-hour classes. The cost is just $49 to cover the workbooks and classroom expenses, and if you bring a friend, we’ll cover your course fee! If you know someone who needs financial guidance, share your own money lessons with them. They’ll appreciate the wisdom, and you might just help them avoid some costly mistakes. A Quick Family Update Many of you have asked how my family is doing, and I love sharing these updates with you! • Kim continues to manage cash flow at Campbell Wealth/CapTrust while also pursuing her passion for horses, both racing and riding. • Cody, our youngest daughter, is in her second year at the University of Kentucky, studying equine science and learning all aspects of managing a horse facility. • Carter, our middle son, recently proposed to his fiancée, Molly! They’ll be getting married in August 2025, with their son Levi serving as the ring bearer. • Connor, our oldest son, a former Division 1 baseball player, is now diving deep into the world of AI and business, likely gearing up to start his own consulting practice. • As for me, I’m enjoying time with my family, taking vacations, playing polo, and, most importantly, continuing to help people retire with confidence! Campbell Wealth & CapTrust: A True Partnership Since our partnership with CapTrust, I’ve received many questions, most commonly, “When are the fees going up?” Here’s the
answer: They’re not going up. But even though I’ve said this many times, I know why some people are still skeptical. I understand because I recently had a similar experience. I needed a plumber for a sump pump issue in my basement. A large national chain had acquired the company I’d trusted for 20 years. When I called, I was put into an automated queue instead of speaking to a real person. First, it said my wait time was one minute. A minute later, the system updated to say I’d be waiting five minutes. Then, the price was outrageous: $1,500 for two hours of work. I had to tell him no because it was simply too much. That experience made me realize how my own clients might feel about our transition to CapTrust. So, let me reassure you: We are NOT changing your fees. We are NOT changing your investment portfolios. We are NOT changing our team or the way we manage your wealth. This partnership was about creating a long- term strategy that benefits both my clients and my team. It ensures we can offer expanded services while maintaining the same high level of care you’ve always received. If you ever have concerns or questions about our new relationship with CapTrust, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to discuss anything with you. Ultimately, I want you to feel as confident in this partnership as I do.
Thank you for your continued trust and support — I’m grateful for all of you!

Retirement is often seen as the ultimate goal — a time to kick back and enjoy life without the constraints of a 9-to-5 schedule. But what many don’t realize is that while retirement is a financial shift, it’s also a significant psychological transition. After spending decades in the workforce, adjusting to life after work can be both exciting and challenging. Understanding the Emotional Side of Retirement For many retirees, the first few months feel like a long vacation with no alarms or deadlines. But as time goes on, some start to experience a sense of loss. Work provides structure, social interaction, purpose, and a sense of identity. Without it, retirees may feel unproductive or disconnected. It’s completely normal to experience a mix of emotions, from relief and excitement to uncertainty and even mild anxiety. The key is recognizing that retirement is a transition, not a destination, and finding ways to create a fulfilling post-career life. Building a New Routine One of the biggest adjustments in retirement is the sudden lack of structure. Gone are the daily meetings, the morning commute, and the deadlines. While this new freedom is wonderful, having no routine can leave retirees feeling aimless. Retirement Reimagined HOW TO FIND PURPOSE AND JOY AFTER WORK
DON’T LET JET LAG STEAL YOUR VACATION
Nothing is quite like a cross-country or international flight. Whether you’re going for business or pleasure, it’s always exciting whenever you depart the plane and arrive at a new destination. Unfortunately, those first few hours or days after your flight can feel like a real drag, thanks to jet lag. Jet lag is a normal sensation when your flight crosses different time zones. It often includes feelings of fatigue, irritability, disorientation, and more. Jet lag can take the enjoyment out of your first day on vacation or your focus away from an important business meeting. This has led many people to wonder how they can quickly and efficiently overcome the misery of jet lag. However, if you use these two strategies, your next long-distance flight won’t leave you feeling like a zombie. Stay hydrated. When you’re well-hydrated, you feel it. Your sleep quality and mood improve, body temperature is better regulated, and you are less likely to get headaches. Those benefits will help offset any jet lag. If you stay hydrated throughout your flight and when you land, you should experience less severe symptoms of jet lag. And avoid over-indulging on caffeine. It might boost you in the moment but could interfere with much- needed sleep once the night rolls around. Get acclimated to your new sleep schedule before your trip. If possible, adjust your sleep schedule to match your destination’s time zone at least a few days before your trip. You may feel a little off-balance and zoned out, but it will help you extensively in the long run. By adopting a new sleep schedule early, your body will be fully ready to embrace the new time zone. Be sure to stick with your sleep schedule once you reach your destination. You may feel like napping when your flight lands, but you should push through the initial discomfort if the sun still shines. That natural sunlight may even give you an additional boost, leaving you reenergized and ready to tackle whatever plans await you! How to Avoid That ‘I Just Got Off a 12-Hour Flight’ Feeling
To avoid this, consider setting a new daily or weekly schedule that includes:
• Exercise (morning walks, yoga, or golf) • Social activities (joining a club, volunteering, or scheduling coffee dates) • Hobbies (painting, gardening, music, or cooking) • Learning opportunities (taking classes, reading, or attending workshops) Having a plan for how to spend your time can make retirement feel more meaningful and structured. Staying Social and Connected Workplaces provide built-in social circles; without them, retirees can sometimes feel isolated. Staying socially engaged is important for maintaining friendships, reconnecting with family, or participating in new communities. Consider:
• Joining a local group or club • Volunteering for a cause you care about • Traveling with friends or family Finding New Purpose Many retirees find fulfillment in part- time work, mentoring, or volunteer opportunities. If you miss the sense of purpose work provided, consider sharing your skills with others, whether through consulting, tutoring, or nonprofit work.
Retiring is a new beginning and a chance to redefine what fulfillment and happiness look like to you. By embracing change and staying engaged, you can make this next chapter one of the best yet!

Rescue, Comfort, and Reunion
How Harley Became a Real-Life Hero
Everyone likes to believe their canine companions would jump into action if they noticed someone or something in danger. However, most dogs will never be in a position to save a life or avert a catastrophe. That’s probably a good thing, as watching one of your best friends risk their life for others would be incredibly stressful. In 2021, a Virginia family experienced precisely that as they witnessed their goldendoodle attempt a heroic rescue with a heartwarming aftermath. During an early summer evening, Ralph Dorn’s dog, Harley, was gone. He started surveying the lake behind his Culpepper, Virginia, home when he spotted the goldendoodle about 200 feet from shore. At first, he wondered what his dog was doing in the water, but he soon realized
his trusty pup was not alone. Harley was swimming alongside a tiny baby deer. “Not sure how the fawn got out there, but Harley obviously didn’t ask why. He just jumped into action,” Dorn, 62, wrote in a Facebook post. Harley helped the fawn to shore, where Dorn greeted the animals and helped them climb back onto dry land. Once the deer was out of the water, Harley immediately started licking the fawn to comfort and calm it down. Harley didn’t want to leave the fawn, but after spotting the deer’s mother, Dorn escorted his heroic canine indoors. The fawn and mother walked away, seemingly never to be seen again. That was, until the next morning.
Harley appeared restless that morning, running from window to window. Dorn opened the front door to see what was happening when he heard the fawn bleating. The deer had returned, eager to thank its rescuer! The two ran toward each other, touching noses and sniffing one another before Harley returned indoors. The brief reunion was enough to calm the fawn and Harley down, and Dorn has not seen either deer since that day. But that’s not Harley’s only heroic feat. The proud pup has also spent time as a certified therapy dog, providing comfort and companionship to seniors in care facilities and children reading at the local library. We can all hope our dogs would take the same actions as Harley if presented with a similar opportunity!
LEAF A LEGACY AND PLANT A TREE! CREATE LASTING FAMILY MEMORIES THIS ARBOR DAY
Arbor Day, celebrated this year on April 25, is a chance to dig deep and nurture the environment while creating lasting memories with your kids. Rooted in the love of trees, Arbor Day is a perfect opportunity to teach your little ones the importance of caring for our planet while having fun outside. With wildfires destroying millions of acres of trees annually, the need for replanting has never been greater. Planting a tree is a hands-on way to make a difference; kids love getting their hands dirty. Plus, it’s more than just a lesson in environmental stewardship — it’s an activity that promotes exercise, teamwork, and pride in watching something grow. Start the adventure. Choose the perfect tree and location. Let your children take the lead in selecting a spot with the right amount of sunlight and plenty of room for growth. Once you’ve gathered your tools — a spade, mulch, soil, water bucket, and, of course, your tree — the real fun begins. Together, dig a hole just the right size for the root ball. While the adults may handle the more technical steps, like trimming roots that twist or grow in circles, kids can pitch in by scooping dirt and getting up close to nature. As you settle the tree into its new home, explain how the roots will anchor it and how its leaves will turn sunlight into energy.
After planting, the work doesn’t stop! Teach your children how to water the tree properly — soaking the root ball without overwatering. Build a mulch ring together and explain its purpose in keeping the roots cool and moist. Then, it’s time to watch it grow!
Chart the journey ahead. Planting a tree is just the beginning of a long-term adventure. Encourage your kids to measure the tree’s growth, sketch its leaves,
and write about its progress in a journal. Snap photos together to document its transformation, and talk about trees’ vital role in providing oxygen, shade, and habitat for all of us. This Arbor Day, take a moment to plant more than a tree — plant a memory. Working together as a family teaches lessons in responsibility, environmental care, and the joy of nurturing life. Plus, the smiles and laughter along the way? Those are the real treasures.

JOURNEY THROUGH TIME DISCOVER THE ENDLESS BEACHES AND VIBRANT CULTURE OF ANTIGUA
Can you imagine escaping to a tropical island where you can visit a different beach every day for a year without ever seeing the same one twice? It’s not a fantasy. It’s Antigua. Antigua has long been known for its 365 beaches, from Halfmoon Bay’s silvery sands to Galley Bay Beach’s surfing waves. Unique for its history and native crafts, this eastern Caribbean island is rich in recreational and cultural attractions, as well as natural beauty. Christopher Columbus encountered Antigua in 1493, and the British subsequently colonized the island and neighboring Barbuda in the 1600s. Barbuda was originally planned as a slave-breeding colony, but the enslaved people brought to the island rebelled against colonial rule. After years of domination by the United Kingdom, Antigua and Barbuda achieved independence as a single nation in 1981. Although Antigua covers only 108 square miles, it has a rich history and cultural traditions. Nelson’s Dockyard National Park offers archaeological sites and more than 12 miles of hiking trails. The 8th of March Project commemorates the lives of enslaved and free Africans who labored on the docks for centuries. Energetic hikers can make their way up a steep trail to Shirley Heights, 492 feet above sea level, to enjoy a panoramic view across the sea.
Among Antigua’s unique attractions is the centuries-old artisan craft of forming tamarind seeds into jewelry and home decor. The island is also home to one of the rarest fruits in the world, the Antigua black pineapple, which is sweet and delicious sliced fresh or in jelly form. Also, a weekly archaeological tour called “Rum in the Ruins” offers a history of the sugar trade and the island’s famous rum. Antigua’s Summer Carnival is one of the most popular in the world. The celebration began when people took to the streets in 1834 to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people and independence from England. Visitors to the Carnival today can enjoy wildly colorful costumes and 10 days of music, dancing, and parades. Among the most memorable experiences are steel band competitions playing calypso and soca music.
