SOW THE SEEDS OF SPRING FRESH PERSPECTIVES FOR FABULOUS WEATHER
You’ve never truly arrived if you don’t have fun in life.
every quarter. As a creative person, I need occasional downtime to step back and focus on enjoying hobbies so I can come back refueled and ready to deliver exceptional customer service. I know I’m not alone in marveling at how quickly the days on the calendar pass by and knowing the importance of working hard to support myself and the ones I love. Still, taking the time to enjoy the
Spring is in full swing here, which means many people feel a great sense of renewal as the winter finally moves on for another year. Although we don’t experience the cold as much as our friends up north, this time of year still signals
a time of new activities here in Florida. Spring is one of my favorite times of the year, as I’ve always considered it a season for new beginnings, setting goals, and taking action — a philosophy I’ve followed for years, thanks largely to the late motivational speaker Jim Rohn and his book “The Seasons of Life.” Living is the same as farming — you need to plant seeds for new things to grow. Right now, I’m planting the seeds of life for the rest of the year. I’m constantly refining my process of being a better landscape designer for my clients and focusing on ways I can expand the success of my business.
journey of life as you build your career is equally necessary. Book that trip. Take that vacation. Give yourself the gift of time away. Embrace the simple joys life has to offer. Sometimes, you just need to bite the bullet and say, “I’m going to do it!”
“We all face stressful or
overwhelming times in life, but we shouldn’t let these moments define who we are.”
My sister gave me a hat that says, “Have More Fun.” I keep it in my truck and look at it every day to remind myself that if I’m going to work so hard, I need to do things for myself as well. Spring-cleaning isn’t just about decluttering your closets or making your yard look pretty for summer; it’s about cleansing your spirit and getting joy out of being alive. I’m much happier and more motivated with my everyday commitments when seeking that joy.
I’m also working on ways to get away from BLG Environmental Services now and then.
In the midst of sowing seeds and making plans, you need to have fun, too. There’s always a temptation to make our work our sole identity. After all, we work to survive and provide for our loved ones — and we need to take those responsibilities to heart — but I’ve learned there’s no point in working all the time if you don’t embrace life. I’m grateful my company is very busy right now, but I always strive to make time to do special things with my family or myself throughout the year. Planning time away can be a struggle sometimes, as I’m very focused on what I do for a living, but I’m equally committed to engaging in precious moments with my children — who won’t stay young forever — and my dear wife. I love aviation, and I’ll be back from attending the annual SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo in Lakeland by the time you read this cover article. I also just planned a family trip out west this summer. I do my best to have short getaways
We all face stressful or overwhelming times in life, but we shouldn’t let these moments define who we are. Things aren’t always going to go your way or fit in
your little box of control, so it’s important to know when to take a break, enjoy yourself, and understand that the tough moments are just steps toward greater happiness if we don’t allow them to dampen our perspective.
We work to live — not the other way around!

Must-Do Seasonal Landscaping Prep SPRING INTO ACTION
Spring in Central Florida brings warm temperatures, blooming flowers, and the perfect opportunity to refresh your landscape. Proper preparation lets you set your lawn and garden up for a lush, healthy, and vibrant season. Here’s how to get your landscape spring-ready. Refresh your lawn with proper mowing and feeding. As temperatures rise, your grass starts growing rapidly. Adjust your mower to the recommended height for your turf type — St. Augustine at 4–4.5 inches tall and Zoysia at 2–2.5 inches tall. Apply a balanced, slow- release fertilizer to promote strong root growth and vibrant color. Check and tune up your irrigation system. Spring showers may reduce watering needs, but Central Florida’s dry spells can sneak up
quickly. Inspect your irrigation system for leaks, misaligned sprinkler heads, and proper coverage. Set your schedule to water early in the morning — ideally before 10 — to minimize evaporation. Prune and trim trees and shrubs. Now’s the time to remove dead or diseased branches, shape overgrown shrubs, and encourage healthy new growth. Regular pruning not only enhances your landscape’s appearance but also strengthens plants against pests and diseases, ensuring a lush and thriving garden in the months ahead. Mulch for moisture and weed control. Applying a fresh layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Use organic mulches — like pine bark or cypress — for a natural and polished look. A 2–3-inch layer is ideal for optimal benefits.
JUMPIN’ JULIET TURNS 6!
Hello, and happy April! This is one of my favorite times of the year. Why? Because I turn 6 this month! When I think about what I want to do over the next year, all I want more than anything is to keep jumping, smiling, meeting new people, and seeing new things. My daddy says I’m “outgoing,” and my smile is “infectious.” I can’t help it — there are so many fun things to do, and I love it when people around me smile! I also love keeping busy. If you live nearby, you’ve probably seen me riding around on the bike I got for Christmas or on my scooter. I’ve also been taking piano lessons from one of the girls next door, who’s in high school. Being so active can make me pretty hungry, so I love going out to eat — especially at my favorite restaurant, Seasons 52. Whenever I’m there, I order my favorite stuff: flatbread pizza, a little Oreo dessert, and a Shirley Temple. It’s a yummy meal — you should try it yourself sometime!
Although I’m only 6 and still a kid, I don’t want to grow up too fast. I like being a free spirit and spending so much time outside. One of the best things about living in Florida is that many people enjoy the nice weather, but I bet most adults would love to spend all day outside instead of going to offices or riding around so much in cars. I think most people would be happier — and maybe even jump more — if they found more time to act like kids now and then. Not everything needs to be so serious all the time. Even if you’re feeling grumpy, try to laugh and smile — or help someone else do those things — at least once a day. And if you can, JUMP! On that note, it’s time for me to run next door for my piano lesson. Enjoy the rest of your April, and I’ll check in with you again soon!

HAVE YOU HEARD THE GOOD NEWS? “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.” EPHESIANS 2:4–5 Plant heat-tolerant flowers and shrubs. Spring is a fantastic time to introduce Florida-friendly plants that can handle the upcoming summer heat. Consider colorful blooms — such as pentas, marigolds, and salvias — or drought-resistant shrubs and grasses, like fire bushes, coontie palms, and muhly grass. Prevent pests and weeds early. Warmer weather wakes up weeds and pests. Apply preemergent weed control and inspect plants for aphids, chinchbugs, whiteflies, or other common pests. Using natural pest repellents or horticultural oils can help keep infestations under control. By tackling these tasks now, your landscape will thrive well into summer, keeping your outdoor space lush and beautiful for your family and friends to enjoy! Need professional help? Planting Memories and Trees This Arbor Day
CREATE LASTING FAMILY MEMORIES THIS ARBOR DAY Leaf a Legacy and Plant a Tree!
Arbor Day, celebrated this year on April 25, is a chance to dig deep and nurture the environment while creating lasting memories with your kids. Rooted in the love of trees, Arbor Day is a perfect opportunity to teach your little ones the importance of caring for our planet while having fun outside. With wildfires destroying millions of acres of trees annually, the need for replanting has never been greater. Planting a tree is a hands-on way to make a difference; kids love getting their hands dirty. Plus, it’s more than just a lesson in environmental stewardship — it’s an activity that promotes exercise, teamwork, and pride in watching something grow. Start the adventure. Choose the perfect tree and location. Let your children take the lead in selecting a spot with
the right amount of sunlight and plenty of room for growth. Once you’ve gathered your tools — a spade, mulch, soil, water bucket, and, of course, your tree — the real fun begins. Together, dig a hole just the right size for the root ball. While the adults may handle the more technical steps, like trimming roots that twist or grow in circles, kids can pitch in by scooping dirt and getting up close to nature. As you settle the tree into its new home, explain how the roots will anchor it and how its leaves will turn sunlight into energy. After planting, the work doesn’t stop! Teach your children how to water the tree properly — soaking the root ball without overwatering. Build a mulch ring together and explain its purpose in keeping the roots cool and moist. Then, it’s time to watch it grow!
Chart the journey ahead. Planting a tree is just the beginning of a long-term adventure. Encourage your kids to measure the tree’s growth, sketch its leaves, and write about its progress in a journal. Snap photos together to document its transformation, and talk about trees’ vital role in providing oxygen, shade, and habitat for all of us. This Arbor Day, take a moment to plant more than a tree — plant a memory. Working together as a family teaches lessons in responsibility, environmental care, and the joy of nurturing life. Plus, the smiles and laughter along the way? Those are the real treasures.
