Chemical Science symposium 2023: Chemistry of polymers

PMMA microspheres prepared by photopolymerization under green LED irradiation Siyuan Yu , Jinfeng Xing School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, China Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres are a synthetic polymer synthesized from its monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA) and can be used in various fields such as optics, coatings, cosmetics, and biomedicine [1]. Traditional preparation methods for PMMA microspheres rely on continuous heating at high temperatures over a long period [2]. Photopolymerization can be carried out at or below ambient temperature [3]. Among different types of visible light sources, LED is environmentally friendly and long-lived [4]. Herein, two facile approaches for preparing PMMA microspheres based on photopolymerization under green LED irradiation were designed. Firstly, in-situ generation of potassium oleate and miniemulsion photopolymerization were combined, and PMMA microspheres with a uniform size of 100 nm were prepared [5]. Besides, dispersion photopolymerization was carried out to rapidly prepare monodisperse PMMA microspheres using a high-efficient three-component initiating system [6]. We aim at providing a more green and efficient route for the preparation of PMMA microspheres. References 1. Ali, U.; Abd Karim, K.J.B.; Buang, N.A.
