After my internship with Framatome, I definitely liked the work I did and the team I worked with. I knew I wanted to continue a career with them. Lynchburg and surrounding areas have that “small town” feel, with industry that punches well above its weight. Even during rush hour, my commute is fairly mild. There’s no shortage of community: from the International Festival downtown to Trunk-or-Treat in Forest, from mentoring high school students in engineering at Vector Space to a lazy Saturday at the mom-and-pop book store Givens Books, there’re all sorts of opportunities. And being a smaller city has its merits – it’s easy to make bigger waves in a smaller pond.

THE LYNCHBURG REGION: WHERE LEARNING LEADS TO OPPORTUNITY

Chris Owen Senior Vice President Pinnacle Financial Partners

INSIDE LOOK

Like many kids who grew up here, I once vowed I’d leave Lynchburg and never come back. After college, though, I found myself drawn right back home, this time with a deeper appreciation for everything that makes this area so special. I grew up in Forest, attending Bedford County schools. When I started kindergarten, Jefferson Forest was a single campus that held grades K through 12 all in one building. But as our community grew, that quickly became impossible. By the time I reached first grade, a brand-new Forest Elementary was built, and before I finished fifth grade, a new middle school followed. I often tell people that those were my first real lessons in community growth and pride. Each new building stood as proof that people love this place, enough to invest in it and help it grow. Lynchburg has a way of pulling people in. In my profession, I often ask new residents what brought them here, and I hear the same story time and again: people come to Lynchburg intending to stay temporarily, but they end up falling in love with it. Some are captivated by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the James River, or the peaceful charm of Smith Mountain Lake. Others are drawn by the professional opportunities that allow for a great quality of life, without the hustle and congestion of a big city. Whatever the reason, people come here and stay because it feels like home.

For me, returning to Lynchburg was an easy decision once I started a family. The area offers everything that matters most: a low cost of living, great schools, low crime, and a strong sense of pride in our community. Add in our beautiful surroundings, rich history, and the growth and diversity fostered by our local colleges, and you have a truly special place to live and raise a family. What I once saw as a quiet hometown, I now see as a vibrant, growing community filled with opportunity, natural beauty, and heart. Lynchburg is where roots grow deep, and I’m proud to have mine here.

ART & CULTURE IN THE LYNCHBURG REGION

A Creative Community Rooted in History, Innovation, and Local Talent

The Lynchburg Region is a place where creativity is part of the daily rhythm — not tucked away, but celebrated in galleries, streetscapes, theaters, and mountain-view festivals. From nationally recognized museums to grassroots makers and dynamic performance venues, the region offers a cultural experience that welcomes newcomers into a thriving, imaginative community. Artists, musicians, designers, and storytellers find space here to collaborate, experiment, and share their work with an engaged and supportive audience. The region’s artistic identity is shaped by its historic architecture, picturesque riverfront, and generations of makers who have found inspiration in the rolling Blue Ridge landscape. That legacy continues today through public art initiatives, locally driven events, and creative businesses that blend tradition with innovation. Together, these elements create a cultural ecosystem that not only reflects the region’s past, but actively shapes its future.

“Creativity isn’t just part of our culture — it’s part of our economy.”

Anchoring much of the region’s arts energy is the Academy Center of the Arts, a meticulously restored 1905 opera house that has become a showcase for national tours, Broadway-caliber productions, visual arts, and community education. Its galleries spotlight local talent, while its stage hosts everything from symphony concerts to stand-up comedy. Nearby, the Lynchburg Museum and Point of Honor invite residents to explore the region’s historical narrative — stories that continue to influence the works of local artists today.

33

MAKERS & CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS

For artists and small creative businesses, the Lynchburg Region offers fertile ground to grow. Spaces like Riverviews Artspace, one of the region’s largest contemporary arts centers, host monthly exhibitions, film series, and First Fridays open-studio nights. Throughout the Lynchburg Region, makers produce pottery, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, photography, and Appalachian-inspired folk art. Seasonal markets — including the Sedalia Center’s artisan fairs, the Bedford Centerfest, Amherst Apple Harvest Festival, and the Appomattox Railroad Festival — give these creators opportunities to reach both locals and visitors.

PERFORMING ARTS CULTURE From classical orchestras to emerging singer-songwriters, the region is full of opportunities to experience live performance. The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra continues to draw audiences seeking traditional and contemporary works. Meanwhile, community theaters — including Renaissance Theatre, Wolfbane Productions, Commerce Street Theatre, Little Town Players, university-based companies, and more — bring creativity to life through musicals, dramas, and experimental productions.

Live music is part of the cultural fabric as well. Outdoor venues, brewery stages, summer concert series, and seasonal festivals create a soundtrack that follows residents from the riverfront to the foothills.

Elise M. Spontarelli Executive Director Vector Space

INSIDE LOOK

Adam and Elise Spontarelli moved to Lynchburg after college, drawn by the strong engineering community. Adam is a mechanical engineer, and with a long history of entrepreneurship in her family Elise jumped right into founding her own graphic design company. They didn’t know at age 22 that Lynchburg would be a long-term home, but 16 years later they are well-rooted in the community. In 2015, Adam and Elise founded a nonprofit community makerspace, Vector Space. A personal passion quickly turned into full time work for both of them, and almost 10 years later the makerspace is an anchor in the community. While there are makerspaces throughout the country, the ideal combination of low cost-of-living with a bustling creative community make ours one of the top makerspaces in the country. At 23,000 square feet of shared work space and equipment with over 250 members, Vector Space is the birthplace of many community initiatives. Public art, little free pantries, infrastructure for local businesses, entrepreneur and workforce training, award- winning youth programs, and most recently a competitive robotics team for teens are just a few of the byproducts of this thriving community space. Founder Elise Spontarelli credits Lynchburg’s strong support for creative, hands-on education and the collaborative energy among nonprofits and businesses as key factors to the organization’s success.

In Lynchburg, there is room and opportunity to contribute your ideas for our shared future. While at first glance, Lynchburg may not seem quite the bustling metropolis found in other cities around the state, we do have a talented art scene, both performing and visual arts, and are within a day trip of several larger cities offering even more opportunity for cultural engagement. Our family regularly travels to Richmond and Roanoke for shows, chess competitions, and museums, and we can be in DC by train or car in just a few hours. Should we want the quiet peace of nature, we can reach several hiking trails on foot and a quick trip to the mountains offers endless hiking, biking, and snow sports. Lynchburg is an ideal spot for those that value community and nature, but do not want to give up the enriching aspects of art and innovation. Join us in making ours a thriving city for all!
