Biola Extension Work During the vacation months members o f the Biola staff traveled widely in the interests of the Institute. Dr. Isaac P. Ward and the Institute quartet toured the country from coast to coast, having many engagements. Mr. Alan Pearce journeyed through California and Arizona represent­ ing primarily the Correspondence Depart­ ment. At the same time, when opportun­ ity offered, he gave illustrated lectures with the aid o f a stereopticon on the life and work of the Institute. Mr. and Mrs. Cutler B. Whitwell had a number of ap­ pointments in California. Their trip con­ cluded with the annual rally of the San Joaquin section of the Alumni Associa­ tion', held in the Baptist church of which Jbhn -Carlos Derfelt, '26, is pastor. Dr. ■Elbert L. McCreery represented the In­ stitute. ;in a conference o i directors of re­ ligious education in Bible Institutes, held at the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago. News Items MABEL CRAWFORD, ’27, was re­ cently graduated from Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio. She is under appoint­ ment for missionary service in Africa and .will be at her home in Whittier, Calif., until the time o f her sailing for France for further stljdy. : CARL E. LINDEN and Mrs. Linden (ROSE FAULKNER, ’23) expect to re­ turn to India in September for their sec­ ond term o f missionary work. They are in charge o f an orphanage. LEONARD EILERS, '30, assisted in the work o f the Daily Vacation Bible School held in the Japanese Church, Los Angeles, o f which TOKOJIRO HORI- KOSHI, T8, is the pastor. ALBERT E. TEBAY, '28, supplied the pulpit o f the First Baptist Church of Riv­ erside, Calif., for a month during the pastor’s absence. ELLA G. BENNETT, ’20, is on fur­ lough from Guatemala. She visited the Bible Institute on her way to her home in Cape May, N. J. Mrs. FLORENCE KERR, ’23, is work­ ing at the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children, Monticello, Ark. SCHERER, ’23, Iquitos, Peru, writes: “We surely realize now that we are almost at the end o f the world. Mail comes on the average o f once a month. Our hearts are burdened for a small town near here where no Gospel work has as yet been done. We believe we could get some civilized Indians there under the sound o f the Word. If they could be won to the Lord, they would un­ doubtedly be used in getting the Gospel to their savage brothers.” MARY HUNTER, ’28, daughter of Rev. and Mrs, JOHN H. HUNTER, is under appointment of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions for work in French Cameroun, Africa. Enroute to the field she will visit relatives in Ireland and take a six months’ course of language study in France. STANLEY EVANS, ’22, P. G. ’23, re­ ceived the degree of B.D. from the San Francisco Theological Seminary at San Anselmo. He and Mrs. Evans are in Cuba under the auspices of the Presbyterian Board of National Missions. They have charge o f all the Sunday-school work on the island. H.’ W. BOYD, M.D., o f the Institute faculty, with Mrs. Boyd and their daugh­ ter, Betty, spent the summer at Indian Wells, Ariz., where Dr. Boyd took over the duties o f a medical missionary to the Navajo Indians, while the missionary was away. MARION WALTER JACKSON, ’21, returning to Los Angeles on furlough from Africa, spent some time traveling in the orient. NORMAN E. EDWARDS, Reserve Chaplain o f the Thirty-second Infantry, was recently ordained at the Immanuel Baptist Church, Pasadena, Calif. IRVING J. HAZELTON, ’22, is sup­ plying the pulpit o f the Christian and Mis­ sionary Alliance Tabernacle, Glendale, Calif. A. N. WILLEMS, ’20, is in charge of the Presbyterian Mission, Fresno, Calif. HAYDN PARRY, ’21, is pastor o f the South Park Union Ghurch, Los Angeles. MARGARET W. HAINES, ’21, is on furlough in Germantown, Philadelphia. In a letter written from Allahabad, India, just before leaving the field, she speaks of an interesting experience which she had while distributing Gospel por­ tions. “A little Hindu boy, about ten years of age, who. was selling and distributing Hindu literature, came up to me in a

friendly way and asked how I as getting on with the sale o f my literature. As we talked together he showed a real interest in the Gospel. He asked me whether I would not like to take some of his free printed matter and distribute it. I replied that I had sufficient of my own, and in­ quired if he would like to have some of mine. He said he would, so I gave him a handful o f tracts. Several hours later, as we were returning to the Christian camp, he came to me again and said that he had given out all of the tracts and needed one more to give to a side-show man who had asked for it.” Mr. and Mrs. CLAUDE H. PEAR­ SON are engaged in work among the sailors at San Pedro, California. Hun­ dreds o f ships, from nearly every large port in the world, drop anchor in Los Angeles harbor every year. In 1929, 7,884 ships registered, beside smaller craft and fishing smacks. Personal work is carried on among the seamen, Gospel meetings are conducted, and Bibles, Testaments, Scripture portions, colportage books, and tracts in various languages are distributed. Sailors who go ashore are invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, and scores of them have been won for Christ. Mr. and Mrs. HAROLD TUGGY, missionaries o f the Orinoco River Mis­ sion, Venezuela, are spending a furlough in the vicinity of Los Angeles. —o—■ Born' To WILLIAM CLYDE RHEA and Mrs. Rhea (CLARA GERING, ’21), a daughter, Carolyn Joy, July 10, at Chi­ cago, 111. — o — Married ROBERT M.
